CONLEY, PHONE 104 - TROOPS FROM CHEROKEE AT CAMP LUMPKIN The ' Cherokee Troop of 12 Girl Scouts are spending the week end ing next Tuesday at the Lumpkin Scout Camp on Wayah road. ' Miss Phillis Reed of Cherokee is troop leader in charge -of the camp, and her assistant is Mrs. Insor. Mrs. George Stiver is cahip nurse. The girls .are students t the government boarding school for Cherokee Indian girls. 1 GUEST PREACHER AT FRANKLIN METHOD.1ST The -Rev. - James VV. Mitch of Bethel, will be guest preacher at the regular Sunday morning .ser vice at the Franklin Methodist church in the absence of Dr. J. L. Stokes. Rev. and Mrs. Stokes and young son will be away for two weeks. .' MR. HOLMES ENTERTAINS AT PANORAMA COURTS Mr. D. Holmes1 entertained Tues day evening with a fish supper at the Panorama Courts. The event of the occasion" was the catching of a 11 pound fish by Mr. Holmes. Guests of the: evening were Mr. and Mrs, J. S. Conley, Mr. and Mrs.. Henry Cabe, Mr. and Mrs. Harve Bryant, Mr. Alf Higdon, Miss Esta Mae Childers, Mr. and Mrs. f. W. Porter. Sr.. Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Reeves, and Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Higdon. Jess Conley served as taastmaster and a very delightful time was had by those present. U. N. C. Graduate , 1 I , Leeida Beshears took her B. S, degree at Woman's College this week. Nantahala Airs, jviauae Dills and two daughters of the Camp Branch section visited Mr. and Mrs. Will Dills at Wesser Creek last week-! end. . Lottie Hogue and daughter from Happy Top were dinner guests at Mr. and Mrs Wesley Dills Sunday. Miss Vestia Morgan returned to Franklin Thursday after spending a week with home folks. Frances Ashe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Derald Ashe, voted the pret tiest girkin the senior class of the Franklin high school, is enjoying a trip to New. York as a graduating present. GARDEN CLUB MET WITH MRS. CONLEY The Franklin Garden club met at the home of Mrs. Lester S. Conley Monday with 26 members present. The assisting hostesses were Mrs; J. S. Sloan, Mrs. Chas Melichar and Mrs. W. W. Sloan. Mrs. T. W. Angel, Jr., president presided. The flower show coni- mittee, composed of Mrs. K. M. Rimmer, . chairman. Mrs. W. A. Rogers, Mrs. Roy G. Beshears, Mrs. Frank Higdon and Miss Mary Willis made a report p'f a. recent meeting and. of the progress made toward the annual county-wide flower show to be held in early August. Mrs. Sam L. Rogers gave a pap er on the early organization o'f the Garden Clubs in North Caro lina. Mrs. James L. Averell and Mrs. Frank Higdon reported on the flower show they recently attend ed at Gainesville, Ga. ; Mrs. H. E. Church, chairman of the program committee distributed the Year .books to the members! Mrs. Church's mother, Mrs. Rainey of Nashville, Tenn., was a guest at the meeting. MISS LEEIDA BESHEARS RECEIVES B. S. DEGREE A.i'ss. Leeida Beshears, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. G- Beshears, was among 385 students to be graduated from the Woman's Col lege of the University of North Carolina at the 49th annual com mencement on Monday June 2. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Secretarial Science.' For the past two years .she lias been a member of the B. S. S. A. Club and the Alpha Gamma Club. Her Senior year she was a member of the Education Club. She has been a member of the Y. W. C. A. for her entire college career and a member of the Altheian society. Lancaster of Hendersoilville : was greeting his friends on the street Tuesday while on a business visit. ' Miss Mary Elmore will leave in a . few days to attend summer school . at Chapel Hill. Harley R. Cabe and his father, J. E. Cabe of Otto, Miss Louise Maine and Mrs. G. G. Watkins spent last week in Florida. Mrs. Watkins visited the Landrums and Johnsons in Daytona Beach while the rest of the party stayed with Mr. Cabe's daughter in San Mateo.. Mrs. Ford Manri and infant daughter, arrived 'from 'Newton Wednesday. Mr. Mann is einploy .ed by The Franklin Press. At present they will be with Mr. Mann's father, J. J. Mann, on the Georgia road. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Perry and two children of El Reno, Okla., are spending a month with Mrs. Perry's mother, Mrs. C. D. Baird, and other relatives. Louise, small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Leach, is reported to be recovering from an appendix operation in the Waynesville hos pital Mr. and Mrs. Milton Hauser and two children of Winston-Salem are visiting relatives this week. Mr. and Mr Fred Hamrick and young son, Jerry, of Elk Park, vis- J. B. Vinson and grandmother, Mrs. J. P. Conley last weekend. Douglas Nichols, son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Nichols of Atlanta, formerly of Franklin, who under went an operation for a ruptured appendix, is getting along very nicely. Mr. and Mrs. Turner Vinson and three children, of Clayton, N. C, came in last week for a visit with Mrs. Vinson's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Conley. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Duncan have moved from the Sloan house to an apartment of Paul West Misses Doric Corbin, Dorothy Lee Morrison, Edith Rickman, Dorothy Sloan Leeida Beshears, Frances Hurst and Dorothy Blum enthal who attended Woman's Col lege at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, have re turned to their home here. H. E. Church, Jr., accompained by his room mate, Richard L. Par son, Jr., of Raleigh, spent the weekend with Mr. Church's parents, Mr.': and Mrs. Herbert E. Church. Noah Blaine, of Sedro Wooley, Wash., is visiting , his brother, C T. Blaine, and other relatives in Macon ; county.. Miss Helen Cunningham has re turned from Virginia Beach, Va! where she spent a week with rel atives and friends. Jake Waldroop, who lias ' been working at Fort Bragg, returned to his home here Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Bryson, Jr., and three children left Saturday for Durham to visit Judge and Mrs. T. D. Bryson. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ashear have returned from a visit to Pittsburgh, Pa. On iheir return they were ac companied by their nephew, Jimmy Ashear who will spend the sum mer here.. Mr. and Mrs. George B. Patton returned to Raleigh Sunday, after a weekend visit to Mrs. Patton'at mother, Mrs. Sally E. Penland. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. McLean, who have been in Raleigh for the past three months, have returned to their home. ' Mrs. J. G Barrington and Mrs. W. T. Moore who spent last week at Duke hospital, have returned home. R. H. Brendle, of Winston Salem, spent the week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mr George H. Brendle at their home on lotla. Sam Gibson, Sr., who has been I taking treatment in the Veterans' hospital in Washington, D. C, has returned much improved. Mrs. Emma Huskin is spending several weeks in Asheville with her son, Frank Huskin and Mrs, Huskin. Mrs. C L. Morton, of West Vir ginia, is here for a visit to her husoand who is employed by the Zickgraf Lumber company. Mrs. Paul Hunter left Wednes day for Charlotte to visit rela tives and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert E. Church have returned from a visit to Nashville, - Tenn., accompanied by Mr. Church's mother, Mrs. J. H. Rainey, who will spend several weeks with them. Mrs. Graham Grindstaff, of Ashe ville, visited her sister-in-law, Mrs. Fred Palmer, Tuesday. Mrs. William E. Willis and young daughter, of Fountain Inn, S. C are visiting Mrs. Willis' parents Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Dowdle. Dr. F. E Verdon, who has been connected with Angel hospital since September, left Wednesday to take a four months' graduate course in .Pittsburgh, Pa. Dr. Ver don made many friends during his brief residence here, mho have expressed the hope that h wil re turn to Franklin after completing his work. Mr. nd Mn. Chrlei Fergvion announce the birth of a son, Larry Charles, at their home on Frank lin Route 4, on Friday, May 30. . Miss Nancy Jones and friend, Miss Betty Lodge are visiting 'Miss Jones' parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Jones of Franklin. Miss Jones is at present a member of the faculty of Duke hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Burrell of lotla attended Mrs. Burrell's moth er's birthday dinner at Toccoa, Ga., Sunday. - " .
