' FOREST FIRE DOES DAMAGE A near serious' forest fire was averted last Wednesday' by the quick work of the local people, when approximately ten acres of land on the Walhalla road, belong ing to C. E. 'Mitchell and T, B. Picklesimers were burned over and ten cords of acid wood belong to Mr. Picklesimer destroyed. The fire had reached alarming propor tions when discovered, and the; fighters worked for an hour and j a half before the flames were brought- under control. Mr. Picklesimer and Dr. Mitchell eVtend thanks to the people of the community who helped to fight the fire and to the highway department, for rakes and other tools used. PICNIC SUPPER ( HONORS BIRTHDAYS j A Sunday night picnic supper : was enjoyed at Cliffside lake by Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Hopper, lit tle Miss Sue Elaine Hopper, Mrs; B. A. Cleaveland and family, Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Hopper, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hopper, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Crunkleton, and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Speed. The supper was given in honor of the birthday anniver saries of Dewey Hopper and Mrs. Geaveland, which Were May 30 and 31 respectively. MRS. TUDOR HALL HOSTESS OF CARD CLUB MrS. Tudor N. Hall was hostess to the Wednesday card club last week- at three, tables of bridge. Striking a charming note in the flower decorations was a particu larly lovely arrangement o,f garden ias and lilies of the valley. . The club members cut for high score prize and Miss Sara Gilder drew the winning card. High score guest prize was won by Miss Re becca Nail, and Mrs. H. G, Story was final winner of the traveling prize. Guest players were Dr. Jes sie Z. Moreland, Miss Grace Lusk, Miss" Mary J. Crosby and Miss Rebecca Nail. . ' Refreshments were served by the hostess at the conclusiom of the ga'nie. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Blanchard had as their guests last Wednes day Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Vander grift of Philadelphia, Pa., who were en route home from a. busi ness trip to Florida. Stiles By CARL MORGAN Rev. C. C Welqh was operated on for appendicitis at Angel hos pital on Friday, May 30.- News has been received of the death of Mrs. J. S. Stansberry at Almond on May 29. Rev. Stans berry is the pastor of the Tellico Baptist church and is one of the oldest ministers in"' this county. Our sympathy goes out to Brother Stansberry in his bereavement. Several people from ' this seer tion attended the - Macon-Swain .singing convention which was held .at the Camp Branch - church Sun day. Reports 'were that a good crowd attended trid well filled baskets were in evidence and that there was lots of good singing. Austin Welch of Route 3 visited Harry Morgan Sunday. Wade Cordell has purchased the Morgan School' property and mov ed his family there. Mrs. Cordell is the former Miss -Ruby Smith of this section and we welcome them all as our neighbors. J. V. Smith is working on Nan tahala clearing the Dam "site.- . Mrs;. Eunice Cole visited her mother Mrs. Maude Mason, Wed nesday. ' ' , .' ' , , Mr. and Mrs. Vinson Owehby of Swain county were visiting rela tives in this section Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence-Jones of Asheville spent a week with Mrs. Jones' parents, Mr. and Mrs. V. C. Dehart. Mrs. Jones will be ' re membered as' Miss Bonnie Dehart. , Miss ' Ruth Byrd is attending school at "Cullowhee. Mr. and Mrs. . .Alyin ' Fulbright of Cullowhee spent the weekend with Mrs! Fullbright's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Byrd. Mrs. Fullbright is the former Miss Nell Byrd. Messrs. Robert .Ramsey and Carl Morgan attended the postmaster',? convention at Franklin, . Saturday night May 24. Wade Cordell who is working near Asheville spent the weekend with home folks. Clyde Morgan made ' a business trip to Franklin Saturday. Rev. T. D. Denny of Flats, has an appointment at Tellico Baptist church Saturday night. Fred Burrcll of Franklin was in this section Friday On business..'. Henry Cole made a business trip to Bryson City Thursday. Sam Cookston is hauling piric wood to Bryson City, Hon. Frank E. Jennings arrived in Highlands Friday to open "Puckrup" the Jennings summer home on Satulah mountain, for the .season. Mrs! Jennings, who has not been well for the past winter, and her nurse came by train to Hendersonville and were met there by Mr. Jennings on Saturday. Dr. Jessie Z. Moreland returned Wednesday from Atlanta w-here she attended commencement ex ercises at the Southern Dental Col lege, going down especially for the alumni meeting and her class reunion. Mrs. Clark Howell of Atlanta arrived Saturday to open her home at the Country Club for the sea son, and has as her . guest Mrs. Evan Howell. ,. Mrs. A. B. Michael and Miss Jeannette Michael of Wabasso, Fla., are at the Michael summer home for the season. Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Michael, Jr., were visitors here for the weekend. Weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Cobb were Mrs. Cobb's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Owen Scott, of Union Point, Ga. Mrs. John Deadwyler arrived Saturday to spend the summer with her sister and brother-in-Jaw, Colonel and Mrs. Elliot Caziarc. Other guests of the Caziarcs are Mrs. J.. A. Randall and young son Alfred of Atlanta. Mr. and Mrs. Sen Franklin of Gainesville, Fla., will occupy the Bertha M. jcunes cottage on Culla saja Drive for the month of July. Mrs. Franklin is a niece of Mrs. H. C Hetzel of Charleston and Highlands. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Hodgson, Miss Mary Hodgson and Mrs. Logan, Mrs. Hodgon's mother, of Atlanta are at their summer home on Cullasaja Drive for the season. Harry Beale of Arlington, Va spent the weekend here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Haworth Beale. Harry' is employed in de fense work at Arlington. Miss Estelle Edwards returned home Tuesday from a several days' visit in Athens, where she attended the University of Geor gia commencement dances. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Galyon of Knoxville, Tenn.,' visited their cousin. Miss Albertina Staub, for a few hours last Sunday. Val Pierson has returned to At lanta after a week-end visit here with his father, S. P. Pierson. Mrs. Jack Wilcox will return home Monday from a week's visit with relatives in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Billy Bolton and Miss Mary Edna Harbor have re turned to their home in Commerce, Ga, after spending several days at the Bolton summer cottage on Mirror Lake. On Monday the parly enjoyed a trip through the Smok ies, accompanied by Mrs. W. S. Davis. Training School Central training school for work, ers in Dailey Vacation Bible School to begin next Monday night at 8:00 o'clock Monday June 9, 1941. Classes are to be held in the Franklin Baptist Church under the leadership of Miss Vic toria Tant each church is planing to . have Dailey. LEGAL ADVERTISING NOTICE OF ELECTION North Carolina Macon County Town of Fnanklin Notice is hereby given that an election has been called and will be held at the Courthouse in the Town of Franklin, Macon Coun ty, North Carolina, on Tuesday, July 8, 1941, at which election the question of the issuance of . $9, 000 street improvement bonds and $1,000 sidewalk improvement bonds will be submitted to the qualified voters of. the Town of Franklin. That the maximum amount of the proposed bonds for street im provement is $9,000.00 and the purpose of issuing the said bonds is to resurface certain streets in the Town of . Franklin. That the maximum amount of proposed bonds for sidewalk im provement it $1,000.00 and the purpose of issuing the said bonds is to rebuild sidewalks and to build new sidewalks ini the town of Franklin. . " - A tax will be levied for pay ment of the proposed bond? if the same are issued. That R. M. Ledford has been appointed registrar and George A. Mashburn and Tom . Leach judges of said . election. That the re gistration books will be opened on June 14, 1941, and will remain open until Saturday night, July 5, 1941, both inclusive, Sunday ex cept, for registration of votes. The registration books will be in the Town Office in the Town of Franklin.. That the 5th day of July, 1941, shall be challenge day. That the polls will be open on the day of election at 6.30 a. m., and will remain open until 6:30 p. m., and no longer, and each and every qualified voter whose name shall appear on the registration books will be entitled to vote. N. -C. itc-j.5 : WHEREAS the needs of this' town require that several side walks be rebuilt in the Town of Franklin and .several mew side walks be built; and whereas the Board of Aldermen of said town have estimated the costs ' of re building said sidewalks and build ing said new sidewalks, in the Town of Franklin, -and find the costs of the same to be in the aggregate ,not less than $1,000.00; and whereas- a statement of the debts and assessed value of the taxable property of the municipality has been this day presented to the Board of Aldermen and filed with the Clerk of this town and is open to inspection ; and whereas the assessed value of the property within the corporate limits of the Town of Franklin as last assess ed for municipal taxation is $1, 149,649.00; and whereas the net outstanding debt of said Town of Franklin is $43,107.00; and whereas the percentage that the net debt bears to the net assessed valuation is .03749. Now, therefore, be it ordained by the Board of the Town of Franklin: SECTION I That there be issued by the Town of Franklin (not more than $1,000.00 Sidewalk Improvement Bonds, bearing interest not to ex ceed 4 per cent annum, for the purpose of paying for the re building of sidewalks and building said new sidewalks in the Town of Franklin, said bonds shall be issued at such - time or times as the Board of Aldemen of said town may direct by resolution within three years after this or dinance takes effect. The time and place of payment,' rate of in terest and ' other details in con nection with their issuance not in consistent with this ordinance shall be provided by the Board of Ald ermen by resolutions adopted prior to the issuance of said bonds, provided said bonds shall mature and be made payable, the first not not more than three years after the date of the first ( bonds is sued, the last of which shall ma ture and be made payable not more than 20 years from the date of the first issued bonds and no such installment or series shall be more than 2 1-2 times the smallest prior installment or ser ies. SECTION II That the maximum aggregate principal of said bonds' as here inbefore stated, shall be $1,000.00. That a tax sufficient to pay the principal and interest of said bonds shall be annually levied and collected. -SECTION IV That a statment of the debt of the municipality has been filed with tht Clerk of tht Town of LEGAL ADVERTISING Franklin and is open for public inspection. SECTION V , That this ordinance shall take effect when approved by the Vot ers of the municipality at an. elec tion as provided by law. SECTION VI " This ordinance shall be published once in each of two successive weeks afteraits final passes in. the Franklin Press, a weekly : news- paper, published in said Town of Franklin. A notice shall, be pub lished with the ordinance in the form prescribed by Section 2944 of the Consolidated Statutes, with the printed signature of the Clerk appended thereto, stating the date of the ordinance, and the date the same was first published, and fur ther stating that any action or proceeding questioning the validity of said ordinance will be commenc ed within, thirty days after its first publication. The foregoing ordinance was passed on the 2nd day of June,. 1941, and was first published on the 5th day of June, 1941. An action of proceeding ques tioning the validity of said or dinance must be commenced with- j in thirty days after its first pub lication. Now, therefore, be it ordained by the Board of Aldermen of the Town of Franklin; . , SECTION I That there be issued by the Town of Franklin not more than $9,000.00 Street. Improvement Bonds, bearing interest not to exceed 4 percent annum, for the purpose of paying for the resur facing of streets in the town of Franklin, said bonds shall be is sued at such time or times as the Boardof Aldermen of said town may direct by resolution within three years after this . ordinance takes effect. The time and place of payment, rate of interest and oth er details in connection with their issuance not- inconsistent with this ordinance shall be provided by the Board of Aldermen by re solutions adopted prior to the is suance of said bonds, provided said bonds shall mature and be made, payable, the first not more than three years after the date of the. first bonds issued, the last of which shall mature and be made payable not more than 10 years from the date of the first issued bonds and no such installment or series shall be more than 14 times the smallest prior install ment or 'series.
