GARDEN CLUB "MEN'S NIGHT
DELIGHTFUL PROGRAM
The Garden Club's "Men's Night"
at Panorama .Courts on Monday
evening was attended by many 6f
the husbands of members and
other fortunate guests who enjoyed
a delightful program arranged by
Mrs. H. E. Church. Mrs. j. C.
Harrington, Mrs. Walter E. Furr,
Mrs. Lester Henderson and Mrs.
A. R. Higdon, joint hostesses for
the occasion, served delicious re
freshments; many remaining later
to enjoy music and dancing.
The president, Mrs. T. W. Angel,
Jr., welcomed the gentlemen in a
graceful speech, with the assurance
that their presence and interest
was an inspiration to their work,
and that they hoped to have other
such meetings. ..'
Clinton Johnson, recreational di
rector of the Nantahala National
Forest, entertained the gathering
with a showing of rare colored
moving pictures. Made in France I
with a miscroscopic lenSj over a
period of several years, the actual
growth of the seed, downward of
the roots and upward through
every process ;. of germination to
the finished flower and leaves, was
pictured and explained.
A pageant, entitled "4000 Gifts
of the Forest", unfolded on the
screen a delightful fantasy of the
manifold benefits of trees, based
on the motto of the forest, "I
Give, I Serve. I Bles,."
Mr. Johnson . gave a brief . talk
on the subject of "Trees", in
which he said ."Every time you
prune a tree, you weaken it. In
stead of butchering trees, which
ruins 'their beauty and causes them
to die, take out a few trees where
the growth becomes too thick.'
He advised that trees could be
made more beautiful by giving
them plant food, instead of reduc
ing them to butchered stumps by
cutting off limbs and. tops. The
speaker also gave expert advice
to garden lovers about pruning
shrubs, advising the replacing of
old .shrubs, that, have ceased to
be ornamental, with new shrubs.
Delightful music was furnished
by Miss Dorothy Sloan, Mrs.
W, M. Schwartz and Mrs. Henry
Cabe.
; At the conclusion of the program
Mrs. Angel presented a farewell
gift from the club to Mr& James
Averell, expressing appreciation of
