The Navy Calls -Young Men
THE navy's decision to use a newspaper campaign
to secure men for the navy marks the need of
the country to insure adequate trained personnel for
the nation's growing two-ocean navy in this time of
grave emergency. It also shows the newspaper read
ing public and the business world the value that the
government sets on newspaper advertising.
The United States government recently decided
to conduct a huge navy enlistment program by run
ning a series of advertisements in weeklies and small
dailies in North Carolina. The Franklin Press and
Highlands Maconian has been chosen as one of the
papers through which this campaign "will be con
ducted, and the first of a series of advertisements
is carried in this issue. This newspaper will strive to
do its part in making the enlistment program a
success. Bob Sloan of the staff, has been appointed
navy editor, and is prepared to give information to
any who are interested.
Western North Carolina has already given many
oi its Dest young men to the service ol their country,
in the navy and Naval Reserve. There is .much good
material in this area that can qualify to the exacting
requirements ol the Navy's service. No better open
ing is offered to ambitious young men to receive
an education through training and travel with lib
ra pay, nor is there any better opportunity to give .
service, to their country in time of -need..
Macon Women Win
MACON'S women have carried off a number of
FuiC3 aL iiic vvcsuciii uiin Carolina rair
this week. Their Home Demonstration Club booth
was judged the best in that division, and the 4-H
Club girls again distinguished themselves by win-
"...
ning prizes and blue ribbons.
Macon men will, we are sure, echo the comment
of one enthusiastic boy when he heard the news,
Macon County is going to town' at the fair!
Thousands have visited the fair and the homefolks
are proud of the exhibitors and leaders whose good
work has brought' this distinction to the county.
The theme emphasized in all. activities this year is
rrociuction r or Uelense ; r or Home and Market.
Attractive presentation was made through posters
and exhibits. .
It is one thing to announce a program; another
to carry it out. Early in the year both farm and
home demonstration organizations held important
meetings where leaders of the various government
sponsored and other agencies presented the neces
sity for increased food production in a world at
war. It was the thorough and patriotic response to
this program by the women and girls of these clubs
that has resulted in their excellent record. '

Traffic Fatalities
MACON COUNTY has been adding to its list of
traffic accidents' and fatalities during the past
few weeks. This week two accidents are reported
resulting in at least one man killed. That all three
men in this car are alleged to have been "drinking,
is another instance that goes to show that alcohol
and gasoline is a deadly combination.
The Highway Safety Division reported this week
that Macon county had five traffic fatalities charg
ed to its 1941 record at the close of the eighth
month of the year.
The 742 persons killed in traffic accidents on
North Carolina streets and highways the first eight
months' of this year represented a 45 per cent in
crease over the 509 persons reported killed in the
same period last year.
"Although traffic fatalities all over the country
have increased this year as a result of increased
motor vehicle registrations, soaring gasoline sales,
the stepped-up tempo of life in general, and var-
ious other factors, North Carolina's record stands
as a shameful commentary on the thoughtlessness,
recklessness, carelessness and inattention of our
drivers," declared Ronald Hocutt, director of the
safety division.
