VITAL AIRPLANE PARTS ARB X-RAyEP REfPPE THEy ARE USEP Worthy Stewardship TTHE report of accomplishments and benefits over a period of six years through the agency of the Works Progress Administration in Macon county is published in this issue. The expenditure of nearly a million-and-a-half dollars in labor and material has furnished, employ ment to a large number who would have suffered extreme hardship. Without this opportunity to sup plement meagre income or no income at all, many would have been forced to leave their homes who are now re-habilitated. The projects have, dis tributed a variety of blessings over a wide range of the county s territory. Indeed, it is not pleasant to envision our county today without this timely allocation of federal funds. While there may have been some cases of waste which was inevitable from nature of the set up, the total of work done is praiseworthy. Paved highways, concrete bridges, . public build ings and water systems tell only part of the story. These are permanent improvements that will help to raise the standard of living and transportation in these parts. There is much more than the eye can see but which is none the less permanent.. Sew ing and canning projects have materially aided many homes ; adult education classes and library service have brought advantages that many had never before enjoyed. . If any one of the benefits can be counted the greatest, perhaps the hot school lunches should be placed at the top of the list. Thousands of the country's children have been served a well balanced hot meal in the middle of a long day. The needy have received this without cost, the undernourished have been brought up to normal weight and grow ing young people have been strengthened ' further towards the ideal of a sound mind in a sound body." - . V This report deserves careful reading. It also mer its appreciation of- the conscientious labors of in dividuals who have translated a part pf the na tion s material wealth into stronger lives and bet ter living. This is proof of worthy stewardship. a worker may be expelled from the "corporation." Expulsion means no job ; unemployment means starvation. . .": v "So much for the workers. But what of the union leaders, the men who originated the sit-down strike, (who turned the French labor movement into a tur moil of strikes, slowdowns and disputes? Alas, there is no word of these gentlemen. One imagines, how ever, that a substantial portion of their number is distinctly eligible for service as hostages. "Apparently, American labor leaders are not im pressed by the fate of their French brethern. If they are, they don t show any inclination to profit by the example. France lost the war largely because her industry failed to produce. And the main rea- gan in the communion service, and tember, 1942, or this notice will be plead in bar of their recovery. Sincerely, Ellen Dowdle Atlanta, Ga. Nov. 2, 1941. . Press Gmment Labor's Problem YVN Navy Day President Roosevelt delivered a speech in which he declared that the produc tion of materials needed for the national defense ' must not be obstructed by a minority of arrogant labor leaders. This part of his speech was thoroughly applauded not only by the group that Mr. Lewis, most ar rogant of our nation's labor chief tians, refers to as the anti-labor element, but by a great number of men and women from within the ranks of organ ized labor. Perhaps these men and women whose reasoning is not warped by thirst for power, see what will happen to them as representatives of labor if Hitlerism is not defeated. It is expressed very clearly in an editorial in. the Charlotte News entitled "Labor Unions In France": yvnat nappens to laoor unions in a nation that fights Hitler too late and with too little is outlined '.. j t r ir't t t ft in a terse aispaicn irom vicny. uyj aecree, an French trade unions are dissolved, their funds con fiscated, and their members compelled to join cer tain "corporate bodies" set up by the state. By the slightest opposition to the puppet government in word, deed, or (it has been demonstrated) thought, DO IT NOW (Christian Science Monitor) One report has it that a curious argument is being used in congres sional circles against repeal of that part of the Neutrality Act which prevents American ships from delivering war supplies direct to British harbors. This argument is that Congress would better wait "till Britain gets to fighting again. If a stepping up of the attack on Britain is expected, and cer tainly it is indicated if Hitler suc ceeds even measurably in Russia, the logic of the case is to repeal immediately and pour equipment into the British Isles as rapidly as possible while the harbors there are free from bombing. Moreover, if any American thinks British isnt fighting, he might try match ing what the average British civi lian is doing.
