Farm Machinery Repair Urged By Defense Boards In a letter 1 from Secretary of Agriculture Claude R.. Wickard, every farmer in this county is be ing' urged to repair his farm ma chinery now instead of waiting un til Spring. .The Secretary has ask ed the County USDA Defense Board to organize and carry out, before' March 15, a complete farm machinery repair and recondition ing program. The .secretary's appeal points ou the need and urgency of the farm machinery - repair move, and asks support and aid of manufacturers, merchants, mechanics, blacksmiths, schools and colleges. i The letter, in part, follows : "The year of 1942 will be a critical one for farmers. . . . The Food For Freedom program calls for record farm production. At the same time,, defense will limit available farm labor. Farmers who are- unable to get enough labor will have to rely more and more upon farm machinery but the de fense p -rogram will mean much less new farm machinery ira 1942. . . . You can help your country and yourself by repairing your old machinery, now, rather than atr tempting to get new machinery next year. ."The Government is takhug steps to provide, as much steel and other metal as may be needed " for all necessary repairs for farm ma' chinery in 1942. To be sure of a supply of necessary repair parts, manufacturers need to know how much will be required. The only way to be sure of repair parts is to order them immediately. Fail ure to make repairs how may mean a crop loss later. The Secretary suggested the fol lowing things to be done at once: Check over your old machinery, Miss Ruth Higgins, a student at Brenau college, spent her Thanks giving here this past weekend. She visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Higgins. J. L. Young of Charlotte spent the weekend here visiting his fam- ily. - Mr. and Mrs. William Blaine spent the past weekend in Frank lin visiting Mr. Blaine's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C T. Blaine. Nov. ith., at their home on Franklin. Route 3. Both mother and babv are doing nicely. "Order necessary parts from your dealer. "If parts cannot be obtained, notify your County USDA Defense Board: "As replacement needs arise throughout the year, use substitutes for steel and iron wherever pos sible." The Secretary's appeal points out that in many areas, county agents and vocational agricultural teachers are arranging for instruc tion in . farm machinery repair.
