The voltage coming from the terminals of the 60,000 horse power generator can be brought up to 154,000 volts by oil-cooled trans formers located near the power house. The "power house is built of re inforced concrete, much of which is below the ground surface. .The generator will te driven Dy a reaction wheel at. the bottom of a deep pit and will' operate under the highest reactive head m tne United States, it is said. Marvel Of Engineering Skill The whole structure is a marvel in engineering skill and construc tion. The rugged terrain has been overcome' by huge rock quarry ex cavations, tunnels under mountains and the building of many new roads high up on the mountain sides. The blasting has been, on a stupendous scale and machinery of mammoth size has been em ployed in the construction. The project has necessitated the building of a small town to ac commodate the army of workers, and has included carpenter shops, repair shops for huge tractors, trucks, locomotives, dump cars and other machinery. The type of this dam is said by engineers to be even safer than a concrete dam. Material 1 has been tested by laboratory ; experts who have determined scientifically the quality .of the clay and the pres sure it is capable of resisting. Prior to the building pf the dam, research . determined the strength of the strata, the possibility of earthquakes, and every other angle which might affect the safety of the . structure. AH this was done before the site was finally located. Edgar Carpenter Train For Naval Radio Service Indianapolis, Ind., December 10. Edgar Carpenter of Franklin, N.
