BIBLE THOUGHT This oiie thing 1 do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are bofore'. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Fhilippians, 3 :13, ' 14. ' 1 H -.- If the present criticizes the past there is not much hope for the future. Winston Churchill. The Year Ahead A SOBER-MINDED people are greeting this New Year, The president of the United States, has called on the nation to make January first, 1942, a day of prayer. Already there are homes stricken by war, there are those who have died and are dying, and there are the many more that will fall before another year dawns. Last year ' in his " "fireside talk" to the nation, President Roosevelt said : "Let us no longer blind ourselves to the undeniable facts that the evil forces which have crushed and undermined and Cor rupted so many others are already within our. gates." It has required a Pearl Harbor to awaken us, arid our astonished eyes may yet witness the ilippines in Axis hands of this war which is about to engulf us. warnings have been iredness dunnsr "sew Year" are are' futile, empty words with our coast i 1 , id populations empty words wnen young men irom every i my are ucni uniicu iu xauc a i uuuoa. The words that we md our friends this and Jnited Effort" to meet and conquer the evil forces that are spreading agony and death over the fair lands of God's world. " -7 "We Now Know" THIS nation of ours has had a shock, but it is wiser and stronger for having had it. Every one of us must be conscious today of a clearer vis ion and a deeper understanding than Ave had two weeks ago. The bombs on Pearl Harbor have de stroyed much more than what the censors would call "military objectives". They have ripped our 'complacency to' shreds. They have blasted the old comfortable belief that the wide . oceans could save us from harm. They have blown away the notion that brutality and deceit and murder in another part of the world could never touch us . in ours. We now know, or ought to know, that this whole world struggle is our war, just as much as it was to the people of Chungking or Warsaw in 1939, or "to the people of Rotterdam or London in 1940, or to the. people of Athens and Moscow in 1941. We now know, or ought to know, that there can be no half way method of fighting an attempt to domi nate the entire earth. We now know, or ought to knowthat this total war will require total effort on our part, with everything we have and every thing we are, with all our resources pledged to final and decisive victory.. . . . It is by far the greatest test and the grandest opportunity that has ever come to our country. We must prove ourselves worthy, of that challenge. The words that Winston Churchill addressed to his own people a year ago can now be applied to ours: let us so bear ourselves that if these United States should last for a thousand years, men will still say, "This was their finest hour." from secretary oi me ireasury Aiyrgcmnau s sjcci.ii iu National Meeting for Defense Savings, Dec .17, 1941.
