is the daughter of Mr., and, Mrs.
G. A. Crisp of Highlands, formerly
of Murphy. Her t; brother, . Guy
Crisp was : the only attendant at
the wedding. .
. The bridegroom is '. the son - of
Mrs. W. M. Cleaveland and the
late Mr. Cleaveland. He is a grad
uate of Highlands high school and
for a number of .years has carried
on his late father's business here
in partnership "with his " brother
under the firm name of Cleave
land Brothers." -.
Mr. and Mrs.' Cleaveland left
Shortly after the wedding to make
their home in Augusta, Ga.

The home was decorated with
Christmas greens and colorful bal
loons. A buffet supper was served
at the close of the evening, and
the New Year welcomed in with
impromptu singing on the lawn
and blowing to toy horns which
were given as low score awards.

four to six days, depending on
the weight of the load.

Mrs. D. C. Byrd remodeled and
painted her kitchen, and renainted
cabinets to match. The latter part
of last-year "underlined house, and

Mrs. Breedlove painted dining
room, put double windows- in one
bed room and made two new
quilts.
Mrs. Ferd Morrison has made
new curtains for two rooms. Re
covered and relined eight old
quilts, and six new ones, has six
more ready to quilt
At present I am revarnishing
and repainting old fiirniture and
having a glass front put in an
old three-corner cupboard. Our
club met at the home of Mrs. D.
L. Parrish in June and refinished
an old walnut ' bed. We used var
nish remover, which worked like
magic. It is a beautiful piece of
furniture now.
Live At Home . '
There are only four families in
our community without a cowi
There have been quite a bit of
canning this year. Ten women
canned 3600 quarts of vegetables
fruits and jellies. Besides Mrs.
Ethel Breedlove filled 1208 quarts
of fruits, jellies and vegetables.

Here's how you make it:
Orange Layer Cake
cup shortening Vt teaspoon salt
Grated rind 1 , 3 teaspoons Rum
orange ' ford baking;
1 cup sugrar powder .
3 egg yolks cup orange
2 cups sifted cake juice
flour 3 egg whites '
Combine shortening with orange
rind and cream thoroughly, add
sugar gradually and cream until
light and fluffy. Add egg yolks, one
at a time, beating well after each
addition. Sift flour, salt and baking

Navy Announces
Recruiting For 1942
CHARLESTON, S. C, Dec. 23.
The Navy Department has an
nounced through district head
quarters here that the Navy will
continue to enlist recruits after
the first of 1942 regardless, of
what may be done in other
branches of the service.
The Navy expects to recruit 50,
000 men in January and will con
tinue its policy of enlisting in both
the regular Navy and Naval Re
serve. Enlistments in the regular Navy
are for six years or for minority
for men from 17 to 31 years of
age. Enlistments in the Navy Re'
serve are for two, three or four
years and include men from 17
to SO. All men will be held for the
duration of the war.
College Men Wanted
Junior and senior students, as
well as college graduates, now

a progressive program announced
this week by the Navy Department.
An increased number of graduates
also are eligible under the new re
quirements. Undergraduates will not be call
ed to active duty until they have
completed their college work.
A 1,000 man quota of officer
candidates has been assigned the
four states Georgia, Florida, North
and South Carolina which com
prise the Sixth and Seventh Naval
districts.. Candidates accepted will
enroll for training as deck and
engineering officers in the Navy's
V-7 class.

6 tablespoons
orange juice
Combine chocolate, gifted orange
rind and butter and melt over hot
water. Heat orange Juice and add
to confectioners' sugar. Beat until
smooth. Add melted chocolate mix
ture and beat until thick enough to
spread. Frost orange layers with tha
frosting and place maple sugar
candy leaves around the edge of
the cake. Makes enough frosting for
top and sides of two S or 9 iaca
layers.
