BIBLE THOUGHT ' and do good; .seek peace, and pursue it. The Deiart from evil eyes of the Lord are .upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. I'salm 34; 14, 15. Peace cannot come until there is justice between nations, and be tween individuals, for that matter. Permanent peace is not only an ideal: it must be an achievement of civilized society. It ought to be worked for. even while craved for. There is a leizal maxim that he who comes imto a court of equity must come with clean hands. It is a kind of blasphemy to ask for peace unless we make every effort to put hatred and greed out of the world. Selected. A Challenge To Macon County 1 , By Sam. W. Mendenhall ""THERE has been much said about what we as a rural people Can do to help win the war that has been forced on us by unscrupulous gangsters. Even with all that has been said and even after there has been a ship sunk off the coast of North Carolina and daily reports of gains that are being made by our enemies, there are still those among us who take it all very lightly, think in terms of themselves only and remark that "an effort is being made to unduly alarm our people. Things that can be done are commonplace and would seem of little importance to some, but it is hoped that every one will realize the importance of an adequate garden, better poultry and plenty of milk and butter. An effort is being made to secure a whol market. A canvass is being made now to the number ol cows in the countv irom which mi can be sold. Farmers have asked for this" rhwrket'. It will depend entirely on the farnTteFV''o-'v-l-er the market is secured or not..K in(.ojrieii,.,toJtgti anything of value for our county,' it"will"be,,nece sary for us to forget what ' 'psorial' wJ&ms' grudges that we may' have and all work together for a common int&rQst. The basis for the program was laid fjown in a discussion of civi lian defense at a recent conference i,n Washington between 4-H Club leaders and Mrs. Franklin D. .Roosevelt, The program calls for. (1) in terpreting to the community the four freedoms: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Want, and Freedom from Fear; (1) making every effort to produce and conserve needed foods in 4-H Club projects; (3) saving for victory prevention of waste, collecting scrap metals, burlap, old paper, etc. (4) Developing individual and community health; (5) learning use ful technical and mechanical skills and volunteering for civilian de fense work; (6) practicing the democratic procedure; and (7) understanding the social and ec onomic forces at . work in this country through discussion groups and other organized activities. Harrill explained that the seven point program is a wartime revis ion of a program which North Carolina club members and their local leaders have been carrying forward for the past year and a half. In commenting on the program Mrs. Roosevelt put in a strong plea for activities which develop a bet ter understanding of democracy and produce better health and nu trition ran1onig young people. H.
