BRIDGMAN TO ACCEPT CALL The Rev. H. T. Bridgman was unanimously called to the pastor ate of the Highlands Presbyterian church for a term of twelve months at a congregational meet ing last Sunday morning. Mr, Bridgman's acceptance is subject to the approval of the Foreign Mission Board. He has served this church as supply minister since September of last vear. The last of Mr. Bridgman's series of sermons on "Missions" will be given on Sunday morning. The sub ject will be "The How of Foreign Missions , and will be illustrated with many of his and Mrs. Bridg man's experiences during their 20 years of missionary work in China Mr. Bridgman extends a cordial invitation to all to attend this ser vice, and especially to members of the Methodist and Episcopal con gregations where there are mo Sun- wr - uay morning services. HIGHLANDS GIRLS LOSE TO GLENVILLE In the girls' basketball game be tween Highlands High sjnd Glen ville High, played here last Fri day afternoon, the Highlands girls lost to Glenville in a score of nine to ten. Miss Sarah Thomp son is coach for the Highlands high school girls' team and a game is planned this week at Glenville. LIBRARY OPEN FOR CHILDREN THURSDAYS Miss Gertrude Harbison, libra rian, held a special opening of the Hudson Library on Tuesday for Highlands school children, for the purpose of acquainting them with the books in the new young peo ple's room. The fourth and fifth grades with their teachers, Miss Sarah Thompson and Miss Ethel Calloway, took advantage of this opening and inspected the new books. Each child was shown where to find the books of greatest in terest to himself and also permit ted to take out a book. There will doubtless be successive visits by these two grades, as well as by other grades in the school, since Miss Harbison has gladly consent ed to open the Isbrary on special day for the children of the achooL MARY SUMMER HAS BIRTHDAY PARTY Little Miss Mary Summer, daugh ter of Prof, and Mrs. O. F. Sum mer, celebrated her fifth birthday anniversary on January 15th with a spend-the-day party, inviting as her guests for the occasion Jane Anderson, Mary Lou McCarty Martha Reese and Becky John son. A birthday cake with five candles was a part of the table decorations. MISS GILDER ENTERTAINS WEDNESDAY CARD CLUB Miss Sara Gilder entertained the Wednesday Card Club with bridge-luncheon on Wednesday. Following the luncheon which was served at the card tables, the three tables of players enjoyed a very delightful game. High score prize was won by Mrs. H. G. Story, and the defense stamps, given as a traveling prize, were won by Mrs. Frank B. Cook. Mrs E. E. Newsom, who is spending the winter here with Mayor and Mrs. W. H. Cobb, was a luncheon guest. Holly and other evergreens were used as decorations. The red and white monogrammed score pads and tally cards were a novel fea ture of the game. SHOWER FOR MRS. CLEAVELAND Mrs. Maurice Cleaveland, a re cent bride, was honored with a miscellaneous shower Saturday af ternoon at the home of Mrs. B- A. Cleaveland. Hostesses for the occasion were Mrs. C. H. Zoellner and Mrs. S. E. Potts. The bride was lovely in a dress of navy blue chiffon over red taffeta. She is the former Miss Bethel Crisp, and her marriage was an event of late December. Miss Doris Potts assisted the hon- oree in opening her many attract ive gifts. After the refreshments, which consisted of a salad and a sweet course, Mrs. A C. Holt and Mrs O. F. Summer gave several piano selections. Mrs. Summer sang "I Love You Truly and other num bers. The entire party joined in singing "The Star Spangled Ban ner. About twenty-five guests called during the afternoon. Fla., and Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Widman is here in the interest of work he is having done on his property on the Dillard Road, Mr. and Mrs. Newman Ofrnond of Murphy were week-end guests of the latter's mother ajid sister, Mrs. J. A Hines and Miss Bess Hincs. Miss Bess Hines returned to Murphy with them for a month's visit. Mr. L. D. Rouse of Montgomery, Ala., spent a few days here last week at the Potts House. Mr. Rouse's handsome new summer home on the Dillard Road near ruptured appendix at Angel's hos tile Country Club has just been completed. W. H. Cobb was the contractor in charge of the building. Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Knight of Arlington, Va., have returned to Highlands for a visit, Mr. Knight for a week and Mrs, Knight for two weeks. . Dance At Helen's Bairn On Sat., January 31st The final entertainment for the benefit of the Infantile Paralysis Foundation will be the dance at Helen's Barn on Saturday night, January 31. Mrs. Sydney McCarty and Miss Nancy Potts are the donation com mittee for the Foundation. Reese, Sr., who foreman on a construction job in Wilmington, is spending a few days at his home here. Mrs. Jack H. Wilcox and he mother, Mrs. H. D. Randall, re turned to Billy Cabin Farm Tues day, after a week-end visiiti in Atlanta. Personal Mention Mrs. Frank H. Potts is still working for the Red Cross War Relief fund and reports two ad ditional contributions: School Chil dren $2.04; Anonymous, $10.00. Mr. and Mrs. Richard C. Holt, who have recently returned from Florida wedding trip, are mak ing their home for the present with Mr. Holt s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A C. Holt, and expect to be at the farm until Mr. A C. Holt returns from St. Petersburg, Fla, wheer he is spending his an nual winter vacation. Mrs. Annie Westbrook will re turn this week-end from a ten days' visit in Washington, D. G, with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Francis L. West- brook and another son, Gibbon Westlbrook. Francis L. Westbrook has been promoted to Warrant Officer i the U. S. Navy. Miss Fannie George Lucas left Friday for an extended visit in Jacksonville, Fla., with her sister, Mrs. Hubert Marshall aad Mr. Marshall. Rev. J. S. Higgins is attending meeting of the Southern Metho dist churches in Nashville, Tenn., this week. Attending the meeting with Mr. Higgins are Rev. W. L. Hutchins, superintendent of the Waynesville District and the Rev. J. C. Madison, pastor of the First Methodist church in Waynesville. During Mr. Higgins' absence, Mrs. Higgins and their young son will be guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Davis. Miss Leona Norton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Norton, is re ported to be making a splendid recovery from an operation for a ruptured appendix at Angel's hos pital on January twentieth. She is a tenth grade student at High lands high school. Mrs. Lyman Picklesimer, who has been a patient in Angel's hos pital for several days, is reported to be very much improved. Miss Margery Waller has suc ceeded M iss Ella Moore as as sistant in the telephone office here. Miss Moore has a position in Harry's Cafe. Mr. and Mrs. Frank B. Cook have as their guest this week Mr. F. L Widemn of Palm Beach, Otter Creek Athletk News The Otter. Creek boys continue in the winning column save an other defeat with CulJowhee, 14 15. On January 3, the local boys de feated the Robbinsville boys in a game 8-11. The outstanding game of the season was played here Wednes day, against the well-coached Cherokee Indians. The Indians were winning until the third quarter, when the local boys, "Big Bertha" Wilson and Newell Owenby along with the splendid guarding of the rest of the team won a 26-22 score. This is the second game lost by the Indians the first being with Asheville. The U team won a score over the little Cherokees 26-15. The P.
