Victor Olmsted, Editor
Cherokee Scout, Died
In Murphy Saturday
Victor Olmsted, 53, for the past
three years owner and editor of
The Cherokee Scout, weekly
county newspaper published in
Murphy, died in Petrie hospital
on Saturday, following an illness
of several days of Pneumonia.
Mr. Olmsted was a veteran, news
paper man, having held positions
in Washington, Philadelphia, New
York and other cities, and his
loss to his town and county will
be keenJy felt as editor and citi
zen. Funeral services were held at
the Episcopal Church of the Mes
siah and burial was in' the old
Methodist cemetery. The deceas
ed was a grandson of Dr. John W.
Patton, .native of Murphy. Sur
vivors are his widow, three child
ren by a former marriage and sev
eral grandchildren.

Last Rites For
Mrs. Howard Bradley
. Mrs. Blanche Bell Bradley, 33,
died in a local hospital on May 13
at 1 a. m. The cause of death was
childbirth, and the child also died
The funeral was held at the Mul
berry church on May 15, at 3 p. m.,
the pastor, Rev. J. C. Swaim, of
ficiating. Interment was ' in the
church cemetery.
Mrs. Bradley was the daughter
of Joe K. and Savannah "Shope
Bell of Dillard, Ga., Route 1, m
the lower part of the county,
where she was born and lived all
her life. She was married to How
ard Bradley in 1941. She was a
member of the Coweta Baptist
crurch.
The survivors are her husband
parents, and the following broth

Brand new 1941 model American
automobiles which a few - months
ago sold for $2,000 are going beg
ging now at $50 apiece in Shanghai,
travelers reaching free China re
port. Rickshaws and bicycles are bring
ing, more than the automobiles,
these informants said, because of
the virtual non-existence of gaso
line in occupied China. Many peo
ple who couldn't sell their cars
were reported pulling out the en
gines and hitching what was left
to horses.
Only Japanese military officers
and the highest of.- their govern
ment puppets are permitted now
to use cars in occupied areas.

convention will be held at the
Ridgecrest Baptist church on Sun

Western District
4-H Clubs To Meet Here
The western distrilt 4-H health
contest will be held at the Macon,
county health department Tuesday,
May 19 at 9 :30 a. m. in the Ash
ear building. .
Miss Katrerine Shuford, county
nurse, arid Dr. Lynch, district
health officer, will give examina
tions to choose the district health
King and Queen. The winners will
enter the final contest in Ashe
ville before competing in the state
contest.
The Macon county king and
queen of health will be announced
at the 4-H council meeting to be
held Saturday at 10:30 a. m. in the
Agricultural building.
This district is composed of six
western counties.

county is trying to find the where
abouts of one of its registrants,
Wylie Astor Brooks, Order No.
1781. Anyone hawing any informa
tion about his present address will
please notify the above board. Un
less he is found at once, he will
be reported to the District At
torney and to State Headquarters
as a suspected delinquent, which is
a serious offense.
John H. Tice
Arrives In Australia
Mrs. John J. Tice of Franklin
received a most welcome Mother's
ay present from her son, John H.
Tice, of the U. S. Navy, a cable
gram saying he Was well and hap
py and in Australia. Her first di
rect word from him since the war
began.
Mrs. Tice was helping prepare
the supper in the kitchen of the
Iotla Community house, when the
message came. She was overcome
with joy.

At Salem Church
The Rev. Philip L. Green con
ducted revival services and a Bible
school at the Salem Methodist
church May 3 to May 10. Enroll
ment in, the Bible school was 42,
with an average attendance of 2s.
The pastor preached at these serv
ices and Miss Virginia Farmer was
organist.

A full evening's program of mo
tion pictures, sponsored by ti church
organizations, will be shown next
week.

Free-will offerings will be taken,

The B. T. U. of this community
gave a very interesting Mother's
Day program Sunday morning at
the Holly Springs Baptist church.
The B. T. U. members gave the J
oldest mother present a , box of
candy. The mothw who received
the candy was Mrs. J. W. Will
iains, who was 76 years old. The
program was greatly enjoyed by
all.

bin who were recently patients in
the Angel Clinic have improved
very fast.
A shower was given for Mrs.
Harvey Cabe at the home of Mrs.
J. C. Ferguson, Friday afternoon.
The honoree received many useful

A party was given at the home
of Mrs. John Deal Saturday night,
May 9, for Corporal William R.
and Pvt. Astor Deal who are in
the Army. Many were present and
all had a nice time.

Announced
The Franklin All-Stars will
open the Smoky Mountain League
Sunday, May 17 when they take
on the strong Cherokee Indians in
a double-header starting at 2 p. m.
on the local diamond.
From all reports, Cherokee is
bringing a young fast ball club,
composed of young Indians about
19 to 21 years old. These games
should prove interesting as this
is the first year Cherokee has
been in the league.
"Fog Ball'' Reynolds says he
