Simmons, was stationed at Barksdale Field La. Lieut Young is a graduate of West ern Carolina Teachers college. In civilian life he was employed as a,n athletic coach and teacher, J. B. Matlock, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Matlock of West's Mill, has been ordered to the Of ficers' Candidate School at Camp Davis, N. C. He was formerly sta tioned in Virginia. Young Matlock has already served three year.s in the army in Panama, and was hon orably discharged. He then came home and was in the first group of man to be drafted from MaGon county. Ed Carpenter, Jr., is now sta tioned at Balboa in the Panama Canal Zo,ne. He joined the Navy in October, 1941. He was sent to submarine school at New London, Conn. After finishing his radio course at Indianapolis, and from there to the Canal Zone. Pvt. Clyde C. Cabe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest W. Cabe of West's Mill is stationed at the Will Rogers Field, Okla. Before reporting to Will 'Rogers Field on May 13, he was on duty at Shep pard Field, Texas. More prisoners are recaptured each year than escape from North Carolina prison system. Chapter Remembers Birthday of Jefferson Davis At their meeting held at the Monday Hotel on last Monday afternoon, the Macon County chap ter of the Daughters of the Con federacy commerated the birthday of the president of the Confederate States, J-effer,son Davis, which was on June 3. An illustrated map of the Jef ferson Davis Highway was shown. This national highway ,named for one of the great men of the na tion extends from Washington across the continent to California, traversing the Southern States, a .spur extending to Kentucky to- President Davis birthplace. Mrs. Lon Campbell read tributes to the Confederacy's only president. One came from the late Hon. Joe Can non, a Union man, who is quoted by S&nator Hubert Stephens as saying, "The three greatest men this nation has produced are George Washington, Abraham Lin coln and Jeffersoin Davis. The president, Mrs. H. E. Church, volunteered to see that the Con federate square is kept in order. The hostesses of the meeting were Mrs. T. S. Munday and Mrs. Lon Campbell. Other members pres ent were Mrs, Church, Mrs. Ward Long, Mrs. Lester Conley, Mrs. Sam Rogers, Miss Lilly Rankin and Mrs. J. W. C. Johnson. The next meeting will be held on the second Monday in July, when Miss Nora Leach and Mrs. F. H. Siler will be hostesses. They are stars of the W. W. N. C. Farm Hour heard each day over the Asheville Radio Station. The show starts at 8:30 p. m. Carl Story is a former resi dent of Franklin. The program is sponsored by the Moose Lodge and everyone is cordially invited to attend. Methodist Church Revival at Maidens The services will begin Sunday afternoon at 2:30 and there after each evening at 8:30. The Pas tor, Rev. J. C. Swaim, will bring the message each evening. A Bible school will be held in the mornings and all the children are urged to plan to attend. The Bibre school will continue for a period of two weeks. The date of beginning of the meeting is Sunday, June 14, and the Bible school Monday, June IS.
