Miss Edith Gabe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cabe, has trnne to Washington. D. C. to work as a government employee. Frank L, Crisp returned to Nor folk. Va. last week, where he is employed at the .shipyard. His bro ther, Grady Crisp accompanied him. -N Eugene Scott is staying with his, grandfather, R. L. Scott, after spending one and a half yeans at the C.C'.C Camp at Cove Creek and Smokemont. Mrs. Raymond I Xalrymple and baby of Hiawassee, Ga.,' is .spend ing the week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Deal. Adrian Howell is spending a few days in Atlanta, Ga., on business. The Holly Springs B.T.U. is hoping to carry its B.Y.P.U. pro gram to Kidgecrest Baptist church, next Sunday night, July 26. The public is invited. i BAPTIST S. S. CONVENTION The Macon Baptist Sunday School convention will meet Sun day, July 26, at 2:30 o'clock with the Wells Grove Church. The pro gram wil include the devotional by Dec Brenlle, songs by the choir, a talk by Rev R. W. Wil liams, cm "Sunday School's Place in World Crisis." There will also be a round table discussion on Sunday school problems. A daughter, Barbara Joyce, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Ram seyat their hme on Rt. 3, on July Sth, 1942. A son, Larry Hall, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Russell, on July 8, 1942, at their home in Franklin. s.n A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Howard Speed, at their home on Cartoogechaye, on July 19th, 1942. Van hook, at their home, Cullasaja, on July 12. On July 12 a daughter, Clara Jean, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ira Cabe, at their home in fcJHjay. Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Cunning ham annnunce the arrival of a son Johnnie, July 12, at their home in Prejitiss. Barbara Jean, a daughter, was born to Mr. anl Mrs. Frank Jack son Hannah, on July 11, at their home on Franklin, Rt. 3. Mr. and Mrs. Roy E. Gregory announce the arrival of a daugh ter, Carolyn Ann, at their home on Franklin, Rt. 2. A son, Jphm Vinson, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Allen, at their home in West's Mill, July 4th. Funeral Services For Wm. C. Carter William C. Carter, 63, died in a hospital on Saturday night. He bad been a resident of the Wa tauga section of Macon county for six years and was a native of New York State. Funeral services were held at the Watauga. Baptist church at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon, with the Rev. Jo Bishop and the Rev. B. Brendle in charge. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Carter, a farmer, is survived by a widow, a son, Edgar, two brothers, Victor and Arthur Car ter of Genoa, N. Y. three sis ters, Mrs. MayJbelle Corey of Ge noa, Mrs. Hattie Hall, of Kings Ferry, N. Y., and Mrs. Roy Drake of Ithaca, N. Y. YOUNG COLORED MAN DIES OF STREP POISONING Lonnie James Thompson, 19, aon of Mattit Porter, died Thursday morning, July 16, at 3:00 o'clock of a streptococcic infection of the throat. He had been ill for several weeks. Twenty-four hours before he died, he was taken to the hos pital, but it was too late to bene fit him. James was employed at the Bur- liked by all who knew him. Welch of the Burn lngtown section, who enlisted in the Navy last February has grad uated from the Navy service school at Norfolk, Va., with the rating of Machinists' mate, second class, and has been sent to school in Miami Fla. for advanced training. He will be at the Miami school for two months. Pvt. Jesse McCracken, son of Mrs. Laura McCracken, who stationed at Camp Croft, S. C, returned to camp last week after spending a short furlough at his home in Mt. Holly Springs. William H. Zoellner, son of Mr. anl Mrs. Carl Zoellner, of High- lanls, has been promoted to Ser geant at Camp Polk, La. James B. Porter, a Mail clerk in the U. S. Army Service, has arrived overseas at an. unknown destination, sailing from Seattle, Washington, according to news re ceived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Porter. Pfc. Joseph J. Gibbs, son of Mrs. Lawrence Gibbs of Franklin, Rt. 2, has returned to the 88th School Sod., Albuquerque, New Mexico, after completing a six-months course in the Air Corps, as ma chinist at the California Flyers School in Santa Monica He fin ished the course as an honor stu dent. He volunteered in July, 1941. First Sergeant, James N. Pen land, son of Mrs. and Mrs. Adin Penland of Highlands, entered Of ficers' School at Fort Benning, Ga., this week. Sgt. Penland had been attached to the 306 Inf., Go. F., stationed at Fort Jackson. In addition to climbing from buck private to first sergeant, Penland holds the "expert'' rating for both the pistol and, automatic rifle. He has two brothers in the service. His older brother, Claud, has been at Schofield Barracks since 1938, while the youngest, George, was inducted in 1940, and is now sta tioned at Camp Rucker, Ala. JOHN J. TICE ENTERTAINS NAVY MEN Mrs. John J. Tice gave another farewell party to Macon boys who have joined the Navy and are leaving for their posts. Mrs. Tice began to give the boy,S farewell parties early in 1938, when they began to volunteer. I hese incliid ed her own only son. On last Tuesday evening about 35 young people gathered at he home inhonor of four .sailors at home on leave ; two Rogers bro thers, Richard and Gerald, Clai borne, .Patton and Bill Sutton all of Franklin. Games were play ed ad songs sung, and a grand time was had by all. Delicious home-made cake and punch were served. The boys left early the next day for their bases; Richard Ro gers to take his ship and the others ffor the tNaval Training school at Norfolk, Va. EASTERN STAR DEPUTY GRAND MATRON HERE Mrs. Edna Fay Latham, district Deputy Grand Matron of the or der of the Eastern Star, visited the local chapter last Thurslay evening. Mrs. Latham made an address and exemplified phases of the work. Accompaning Mrs. Latham from Bryson City, were Past Grand Patron John L.
