Story Of First Sunday School The following interesting inci dent of many years -ago has come to us from Elias t. White of LaVerne, California, formerly of Highlands. It will be remembered that Mr. White's valuable article on the early history of Highlands appeared last year in the "Ten Years of Progress" edition of this newspaper. He has promised to add to this ih the near future some of his reminisences. which we know our readers will welcome Something over a year ago' (he ' appeared in these columns an ac count of the founding of the first Sunday School at Highlands, . back in 1876. Readers may . remember that Dr. Harry E. Kelsey, of Bal timore, was tie one to discover those old records and bring them to the light of daj. A story which may be of in terest centers about -that little portable melodian which made its weekly trips from Mrs. Kelsey's home to the old "Law House." Mr. S. T. Kelsey first took it but from time to time others - shared the task of cohveying it back and forth. Dr. Kelsey has told me that he distinctly remembers John and Zeb Alley assuming this part. Now the story. One summer day of 1876 a correspondent of one of the large New York daily papers was stopping over in the tiny vil lage which was not much more than a crossroads. He observed a man carrying a small reed instru ment and stopped to question what it meant. It was T. B. White; superintendent of the re1 cently formed Sunday School, with the melodian on his shoulder. When the correspondent learned what he was doing he requested Mr. White to stop long enough for him to sketch the scene. Possibly the sketch and story appearing later in that great daily was the first heralding of the infant town to the world from the metropolis of our nation.
