JESSE SLOAN (By Mr. F. L. Siler) The 91st Siler family meeting was held with Mrs. Jesse Sloan last Thursday with 127 present. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sloan arnd Mrs. Reba Tessier were assistant host and hostess. The day was perfect and place of meeting ideal on the knoll overlooking the Lit tle Tenjnessee valley. All except one of Mrs. Sloan's eight chil dren were preser.it. Nine states and Puerto Rico were represent ed. Six ministers attended. There were mine deaths in the large connection, reported. Among these were two of the oldest mem bers, Mrs. Mary Allman and Mrs Kope Elias. One of the most re cent was Mrs. W. Neville Sloan. With these was the passing of the last inegro of the name of Siler representing the last of the family's slaves, "Uncle" Emlas Si ler, who was present at the last meeting. The outlook committee read a long list of youing relatives in the service of their cour.ity this list to be placed in the "Treasure Chest.'' One soldier was present im uniform on furlough A. T. The present war is the fourth that lias taken place since this family began holding annual meetings in Ma con county. The excellent meal was spread on a long table beneath the oaks The secretary, James Gray, of Washington, D. G, was absent for the second time in 20 years so his minutes of the last meet ing were read by Neville Sloan. The Rev. C. C. Herbert asked the blessing and the Rev. S. R Crockett dismissed the meeting with a prayer that the family might continue their annual ga therings in this Christian coun try. There was the usual sing ing of "God Be With You 'Til We Meet Again." The Rev. Ru fus Morgan invited the reunion for next year. Among the out-of-town guests attending were Mrs. Dick Slagle and two children from Puerto Rico, Mrs. Thomas Porter and two children of Nashville; Miss Hope Daniels of New York City, Miss Eleanor Sloan of Idaho, Miss Timoxena Sloan and Neville Sloan of Atlanta; Dick Sloan of Pelham. AND MRS. J. L. YOUNG The reunion of the Young fam ily met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Young on Franklin Rt. 1, last Sunday. Only two of their children were present; Louis of Clayton, 46a,, atid John of Athens, Ga., and 62 relatives and friends attended. Mr. and Mrs. Young had a happy surprise' when Mrs. Young's younger brother, George Long, and son, Ray, Tignall, Ga, came to the reunion. The day was enjoyed by all despite the absence of many members of the family. An old time singing was enjoyed in the afternoon with Mr. Bob Ptarrish at the piano. YWA OFFICERS INSTALLED BY CANDLELIGHT Art impressive installation ser vice of the YWA officers of the First Baptist church, Franklin, for the year 1942-43, was held by candlelight at the home of the Rev. and Mrs. C. F. Rogers on .Thursday evening. At late twilight the retiring fo ficers, in long white robes, marched up to the pergola oar Tying lighted candles, singing the YWA theme song, "O, Zion, Haste." Upon arrival they gave the charge to their successor, presenting her with the lighted candle. Officers for the coming year are as follows: Sponsor, Mrs. C. F. T. S. MUNDAY GIVES DINNER FOR OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS Mrs. T. S. Munday of the Munday hotel was hostess at a dinner party last Tuesday eve ning in honor of friends, Rev. Dr. and Mrs. J. W. Segars and son, Jim Hugh, of Manchester, Ga., and other out-of-town Methodist ministers. Dr. Segars is the pas tor of the First Methodist church of Manchester and served as sec retary of Mission Week at the Junaluska assembly. The Segars stopped Over in Frar&lin after a two weeks vacation at Junaluska. It was a lovely dinner and thor oughly enjoyed by all. EASTERN STAR MEMBERS ATTEND DISTRICT MEETING Twenty members of Nequassa Chapter No. 43 of Franklin at tended the annual 12th District meeting of the Grand Chapter oi North Carolina, Order of the Eastern Star, which was held in Dillsboro Tuesday afternoon and evening of this week. All phases of the work were exemplified and Nequassa Chap ter had a part in both sessions of the meeting. Those attending were : The Misses Elizabeth Slagle, Virginia Slagle, Lassie Kelly; and the Mes- dames Alice Ray, Edith Boesser, Beth Guffey, Ida Mae Jamison, Irene Bryson, Nobia Murray, Grace O'Mohundro, Frances Hig don, Jenett Thomas, Eunice Church, Leola Penro, Sallie Moore Margaret Cabe, Lois Ward Alice Rimmer, Elizabeth Waldroop and Leona Moore. On Thursday evening, August 13, the Worthy Grand Matron, Mrs. Mary K. Fleet, and other distinguished guests will he pres ent at Nequassa Chapter for a special meeting. GIRL SCOUTS AT CAMP LUMPKIN The Franklin Girl Scout Troop went to 'Lumpkin Camp for a three day camping trip on July 20, under the supervision of Mrs. Hubert Wurdlaw, leader and coun selor, Lane Porter. Personal Mention The host of relatives and friends of Weaver H. Holt, a former resident of this county who has lived in Alaska and in California for many years, hae been glad to welcome him home for a brief visit. Among those with whom he stayed were his aunt, Mrs. W. W. McConnell; his uncle, A. C. Holt, of Highlands ; and his friends, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ashear. Mr. Holt is a member of the Navy Reserve. This is his first visit home in seven years. Robert M. Hubbard of St. Aug ustine Fla., accompanied by Mrs. Hubbard and two small children, arrived Sunday to fill the posi tion of linotype operator of The Franklin Press. spent the week-er.d with his mother, Mrs. Arlessa Koper, on Burningtown. Miss Dorothy Penlan'd left sev eral days ago for Cliarlotte where she will finish her secretarial training for defense work. Miss Penland has signed up for the duration of the war. Mr. and Mrs.. R. Taylor Most ly have returned to their home in Staunton, Va., after visiting relatives here. Mrs. Mosely was the- former Miss Louise Ray. MRS. GEORGE MERRITT PRESTON, whose wedding was sol emnized on July 27th in the Franklin Methodist church. Mrs. Preston is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse S. Coriey. Mr. and Mrs. Preston have returned from their honeymoon and are now at home in Cleveland, Ohio, where Mr. Preston is a research engineer with the National Advisory Board of Aeronautics. T. E. L. Pat- ton, and aunt, Miss Olive Patton, last week on their way to Lub- buck Field Tex., where Lieut. Pat ton is an instructor with the Air Corps. Mrs. Patton was Miss Grace Lee Allen the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Lester Al len of Snow Camp and Roxboro, and at the time of her marriage was home demonstration agent of Person counrty. W. Rainey of Nashville and Mrs. McLean of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Butler of Cedar Springs, Mich., are vis iting Mrs. Butler's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. D Sutton.. They plan to spend a week itti Franklin vis iting friends and relatives. Dur ing their trip down they stopped in Gabbard, Ky., to visit Mrs. Butler's sister, Mrs. H. B. Ellis.
