Sloan Wins Laurels In Boxing Bout For 39th Falcon Editor Puts On Gloves To Meet Challenge Deserving the spotlight in his home paper for which he was re porter preceding his enlistment last December, Pfc. Robert S. Sloan of Fort Bragg won high praise for a real .feat of heroism reported in the 39th Infantry publication and also in the Fayettteville newspaper. The Falcoro, mimeographed publication of the 39th Infantry at Fort Bragg (published at "o ex pense to the Government) of which Pfc. Sloan is assistant editor, the following is quoted from Sports Editor Cpl. John Nash's "Spot lita" . column : Well deserving the Spotlite this week is Private First Class Rob ert Sloaji, Intelligence Platoon, Regimental Headquarters Com pany. Sloan wOn the spot and our pro found admiration Wedneslay night by virtue of his display of the old "Fighting Falcon" spirit in the finals of the Ninth Division Box ing Tournament. Under the plan, according to W. H. Overall, association secretary treasurer, Victory Pig Clubs are being organized in this territory with farmers becoming members who pledge to disignate at least one pig as a Victory Pig. This pig is to be sold later and the pro ceeds invested in War Bonds and Stamps. John A. Funds For Special Road Betterments Recalled RALEIGH, N. C September 18. State Highway Commission meet ing here tolay voted to recall all funds set up for special road bet terments throughout the State. Highway Chairman, Bei Price, said this action was taken "be cause the Commissioners recogniz ed the conditions confronting the Highway Department brought on. by declining revenue." Price indi cated the Commissioners were de lighted to take this measure. The resolution as drawn up by the highway group read as fol lows : "Resolved, that all allocations for -specific betterments be can celed except for retreatment pro jects, county road improvemer.ft under division wide betterments a.nd such betterment projects now already under way where it is nec essary to preserve the investment already made in the project." The action was taker because of existing Federal restrictions halt ing any construction work not di rectly aiding the war effort and an effort to conserve all funds available to supplement a critical ly declining highway revenue. Former Nonveigan floating whale factories are now Allied gaioiine tankers. the Falcon. Boxing Team who was ruled ineligible at the last minute. Facing the ring wise veteran, Sgt. Boiling from the 47th Infantry Sloan displayed a willingness to fight and managed to land a few blows before getting the count early .in the second round. There is a real story behind the ring appearance of the Falcon's Assistant Editor. While busy with stories and such ore the Boxing Team, he became impressed with the team's spirit. So ratner than see them forfeit this one fight and to gain 5 points for the 39th by entering the ring (Ed. Note : Ac cording to the A.A.U. rules a for feited fight nets the winner 20 poinds while a decision win only 15 iwints going to the loser) Sloan donned the gloves for the first time in his life.
