been season guests at Tricemont

made many friends here during
that time. Mrs. Reilly's purchase
combines two very essential pres
entday qualities; it commands
beautiful views and is within easy
walking distance of the center of
the village.
This attractive place was built
by W. O. Jones of EJberton, Ga.,
in 1920, and until his death that
very prominent Georgia family
formed a part of our regular sum
mer colony. Following Mr. Joroes'
death, the family became more or
less scattered, gradually ceasing
their annual visits.
Highlands is pleased to add Mrs.
HieHy to its steadily growing list
of summer home owners.

Trained Women
Needed In Victory Effort
Govt Pay Expenses
RALEIBH, Dec. 8. Failure of
enough North Carolina women to
prepare themselves for work es
sential to the victory effort is
causing a serious reduction in en
rollment in training courses finan
ced by the Federal government,
Director Edward W. Ruggles of
the N. C. State College Extension
Division declared today.
Citing the War Manpower Com
mission's edict that the coming
year will see millions of additional
women required in war work, Di
rector Ruggles said too few North
Carolinians are taking advantage
of the free courses which will qual
ify them for war work industries
and essential government activities.
"Women must prepare themselves
for the fast-approaching period
period when they will be called oni
in increasing numbers to enter the
war production program", Ruggles
declared. Some of the jobs open
to women pay as high as $2,000 an
nually to start. Ruggles had a re
quest today for five women to take
drafting jobs paying $135 to $150
monthly to begin. He was unable
to fill the request because the
hundreds of women who have
completed the short courses at
State College already , are holding
down essential jobs.
Nearly a score of short courses
have bew scheduled to start in
a new series next month, Ruggles
said, urging women to write to his
office for a new bulletin describ
ing the courses, which last from
10 to 20 weeks.
All expenses of the training ex
cept students' subsistence and
textbooks are paid by the Federal
government. In most courses, high
school graduation is the only edu
cational requirement.
Courses in the new series will
include aerial bombardment protec
tion, aircraft inspection, architec
tural and marine drafting, chemical
testing and inspection, engineer
ing drawing, engineering funda
mentals, fabric inspection and tetst
ing, fundamentals of machinery, in
dustrial safety engineering, mater
ials testing and inspection, produc
tion supervision, war production
engineering and contracting, radio
communication and surveying.
In addition, courses are available
in aircraft sheetmetal work, weld
ing and machine shop practices.
Survey Shows 78 Buy
Bonds And Stamps
Washington, D. C. A recent
survey by the Gallop poll revealed
that 78 percent of Americans have
bought War Bonds or Stamps.
Reporters for the poll asked a
representative cross-section of the
voting population this question:
"Do you happen to have bought
any war bonds or stamps "
The result was:
Yes 78 percent.
No 22 percent.
Dr. George H. Gallup, head of
the Institute of Public Opinion, said
the findings were splendid testi
mony to the effectiveness of the
Treasury Department's War Sav
ings Campaign
Seeking the answer to the fail
ure of one out of every five adult
Americans to buy War Bonds or
Stamps, Dr. Gallup made a further
study and found that two large
segments of the population the
lower income group and farmers
are responsible for this situation.
