"This is the sum of good government : equal and .exact justice
ty? all men, of whatever state or persuasion; la jealous care of
the rigtfit of election, absolute acquiescence to th^ decisions of the
majority ; freedom of religion, freedom of press; .freedom of per
son, and trial by juries impartially selected.
"During the present throws and convulsions of the ancient world,
during these agonizing spasms of blood and slaughter abroad, it
was not strange tliiat the agitaticn of the billows should reach evjen
this distant and peaceful shore. I know, indeed, that some honest
men fe.tr that a republic cannot be strong, that this Government is
not strong .enough. But would the honesit patriot in the full tide
of successful experiment abandon a Government which (has so far
kept us free and firm on the theoretic fear that it may possibly
want energy to preserve itself? I trust not. I believe this, on tfhe
contrary, the only Government where every man would fly to the
standard and meet invasion as his own personal concern. ... I be

Wednesday Closing Will Increase Manpower
FRANKLIN has exhibited again the spirit of com
munity cooperation in the decision of business
firms to close on Wednesday "afternoons for the
next five months. The purpose of this joint action
is to release both employers and employees to raise
victory gardens so urgently needed to 'help the acute
shortage of food which this global war is bound to
create. ?
It is estimated that this action on the part of
local stores and filling stations will release at least
one hundred aryj fifty men and women to increase
production by more than 800 man-hours ? counting
the women ! This time off will be welcomed b)
many and it can fairly be judged that it will be put
to good use during gardening and canning time.
To some, there may come a certain amount of
financial loss from closing their places of business.
But it is readily seen by mast people that to be a
success all must cooperate. If one grocer, for in
stance, should refuse to close, this would be "the
weak link in the chain" which would prevent others
from doing so, and thus deprive all of a greater
benefit.
It may safely be said that all of those who have
united in this commendable effort to release* man
power for the patriotic duty of increasing food
production will not regret their action.
The buying public will gladly fall in line and
adapt their shopping time to these new hours.
The greater good coming to all should more
than compensate for any lesser personal loss or in
convenience. It is the least we can do if it contri
butes to the war effort.
"The State With A Future"
^JORTH Carolina's very-much-alive Department
* of Conservation and Development has just is
sued a new illustrated folder entitled "A Stafe With
a Future". This is designed primarily to distribute
to the thousands' of soldiers stationed in the state's
training camps who desire something attractive to
send home to their parents and friends to give them
some idea of what kind of a state North Carolina
is.
The largest and most beautiful illustration is a
glorious picture of Clingman's Dome in the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park. Other scenes are
depicted showing the varied industries as well as
historic landmarks of a state which stretches 500
miles from the sea to the Appalachian mountain
tops with 60,000 miles of highway, and an income
of $300,000,000 to the farmers of the state.
This folder, just off the press, and free to all
for distribution, is a welcome harbinger of ?spring,
a reminder that tourist time will soon be here and
that cham!>ers of commerce in this vacation land
of the old North State can use this good propa
ganda to mail out with their local folders to pros
pective summer visitors.
Letter to Editor
Medical Detachment,
124fh Inf.,
Fort Benning, Go.
Dear Editor:
1 have noticed in the Pre* for
the last two or three weeks, that
there have been quite ? few
VERY interesting letter*. Thoee
politicians can't imagine how proud
?we soldier boys are of them.
While we are i* Ivere either fight
ing or preparing to fight ior a
cause ttot we hope will bring u?
back home some day where we can
live in peace as we one* did,
they are th'ere raising the devil
and causing bad feelings among
the people that voted for th*m
to dp the right things that will
better their future. It seems though
that anything is all right just in
order to grab a few dollars and
raise to a little higher pow*r. It
would be good for us all to know
that just this is one of the great
est causes of this conflict -we are
in now.
I hope that the people of Macon
County will do as some of thjeir
boys; that I know are doing and
that is; go a little farther down
on their knees and ask for that
power that brings us closer toge
ther and keeps us living a straight
life instead of sinking deeper inito
that old cut-throat jealousies that
?we are fighting against.
We are trying to do our part.
.We you going to help ?
Thanks,
Pvt. Frank L. Criap.
In Memoriun
(In Kememt>rance wf Macie Fox)
She was carried to Angel's Oin?
Almost one year ago, where her
Case was fought so hard, but
God said "Macije you must go."
She suffered more pain than
You or I know, but God had a
better
Place for her than in this wicked
world below.
But her suffering now is over
This pain no more she'll have to
bear,
She has gone to share the glory
with the loved ones up there.
As I stood beside her bed
These words I heard her say
"To tell her loving husband
To meet her in heaven some day.
Her husband was so far away
That while her sickness he could
not share.
They had called him overseas to
fight for freedom for you and
me,
And, Christians, don't forget to
fay. . . .
That he will go to I've with her
when God calls him away.
As the nurses stood beside her
bed.
Their faces with tears were wet,
For when stye knew she was pass
ing away. ...
She begged God to hard to let her
stay.
