"Town and Farm In Wartime" ? MEN OVER 38 WILL NOT BF DISCHARGED The war department on March 31 stopped the discliarging of men over 38 years old. Hereafter, such individuals will Ue transferred to an inactive status in the enlisted reserve corps, subject to the fol lowing conditions: v A. The man must request trans fer to an inactive status to enter an essential indnustry, including agriculture, and accompany his re quest by a statement from the War Manpower Commission to the ef fect that his release is desired. B. The man will be recalled to active duty upon request of the War Manipower Commission. WIVES OF SERVICE MEN TO GET MATERNITY CARE Maternity care for wives of ser vice men and caire for their in fants will be available shortly for thnosc Who apply to state health departments, according to Kathar ine F. Following appro priation by Corjgress of $1,200,000 to meet .estimated need to July, I plans are being rushed to extend such aid to women in the 48 states, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. The care will be available to the wife or infant of any "buck" private, pri vate first class, corporal, or ser geant, in the Army and compara ble grades in the Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard. It is not available to wives of men in higher ranks. TIRES FOR FARM EQUIPMENT Tire dealers or persons selling or servicing farm equipment ore now entitled to keep on hand a maximum of six rear-wheel trac tor tires. Dealers who have the re plenishment portions (part B) of rationing certificates calling for truck tires may restock with tires suitable for farm equipment in stead. GAS FOR SCHOOL BUSES School bus operators who did not receive revised certificates of ?war necessity before April 1 taay obtain supplemental gasolire al lowances if necessary, ODT has announced. I EXAMINATIONS FOR TUBER CULOSIS Since the outbreak erf war, the U. C. Public Health Servic* has given X-Ray examinations for tu berculosis to nearly a quarter of a million people. Slightly more than ore in every 100 persons examined have significant tuberculosis of the lungs. From 55 to 60 percent of the cases are in the early stafte most amendable to treatment, usu ally without sanatorium care. From 35 to 45 percent of the cases dis covered by_the Public Health Ser vice are moderately advanced *id only thr/ee to tour percent far advanced. LEGAL HELP FOR SOLDIERS Free legal assistance will be available for all military personnel urjder a plan sponsored jointly by the American Bar Association and the war department. Legal assist ance offices will be established at each post, camp ^nd station ire the U. S. A qualified commissinned officer who is also a licensed at torney is to be appointed by the commanding officer of the post as the legal assistance officer. As sisting the legal assistance officer, will he volunteer civilian lawyers from nearby communities. Ellijay By HAZEL AMMONS Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Bowman and family attended the funeral of Mr. Bowman's brother. Nelson St iwinter, on February 9, at the Buck Creek Baptist church. Mr. Stiwinter died suddenly with heart attack. Gordan Evett who has been em ployed in Gastonta, has returned home to his family. Miss Rose Coggir.is spent the weekend with her brother, Eldan Goggins and Mrs. Cogens. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Buchanan was called to attend the funeral of Mr. Buchanan's brother, of Gay, in Jackson county, last week.
