Book of Common Prayer. Save The Babies \17HILE human life is being destroyed on a scale never before equaled, there are life-saving forces going quietly about their work. In this county the health department has been doing valuable work in the field of pre-natal and infant cane. The infant death rate could be mater ially reduced, and the personnel of the county health department are laboring to this end. Dr. C. N. Sisk serves this county and Transyl vania county in directing the many activities of the department under the State Department of public health. His assistant, Dr. Mary Michal, is a physi cian and child specialist. With Mrs. Josephine D. Gaines, county health nurse, clinics are being con ducted in different parts of the county to give ad vice and help to expectant mothers. Dr. Sisk points out in an article in this issue the dangers which often result in the needless deaths of mothers and babies through lack of pre-natal care and lack of knowledge of hygienic and health rules. Instruction is given to mothers at these clinics which may save life, and that will certainly lessen suffering and discomfort. It is the duty of every mother to safeguard the lives of her children by learning all she can at these clinics. Furthermore, public opinion should strengthen the arm of the law in preventing women not quali fied to practice midwifery. Dr. Sisk has stated vae law in this respect in his article, and lists the names of those who are licensed. This county is particu larly fortunate in the capable health officials who are working untiringly for better health conditions. They should receive the encouragement and support they deserve from all citizens. And, like you, we've lost many of the men who used to help us. Yet that's only part of the story. Every day, on farm and factory, there's something new to test the skill of those running the business. Not only get ting help, but ? to mention a few others ? rising costs, making a fair profit, and letting aside reserves for a rainy day. Essentially, those problems are the -mow for farm and factory, though they may at time* differ in size. But it is that thine called "management," that peculiarly American ability to think through problems no matter how tough, that is helping to see us through today. It is this skill in management that farmers and businessmen have most in common, a skill which insures the realization of our determination to produce all that's needed for our country today, and, tomorrow, to make a fair living through greater serv. ice to our fellow Americans.
