FRANKLIN, N. C., THl'RSDAW, MARCH 9, 1944
$2.00 PER YEAR
Red Cross War Fund Drive
Short Of $6,500 Goal
Chairman Urges All To
To Increase Their
Gifts
Reports on the 1944 Red Cross
War Fund drive are coming in
steadily from the corps of work
ers in town and county, Ijut the
goal is still far from being at
tained, Chairman John Archer
stated today.
We will need more gifts, both
large and small, to reach the
$6,500 quota assigned to this
county," Mr. Archer said. He
appeals to every citizen to dou
ble or treble any former contri
bution, and to give in the face
of the need of our fighting
men.
It is well for us to realize
that while this quota is the lar
gest that has ever been assign
ed to us, every other county in
the United States has a pro
portionate increase in its quota.
By this time the need should
have been so impressed on us,
with our own men receiving the
ministrations that only the Red
Cross can give, that every one
knows THE RED CROSS IS
YOU, the chairman reminds us.
A special appeal is made to
those who have already contri
buted, to increase their gifts to
the sum of $25.00 as members
of the Take Care Of A Boy For
A Year Club. This is suggested
to parents whose sons are in ac
tion as well as to others. There
is no doubt that many will irj-,
crease their gifts when they
learn the quota is not met.
The Highlands campaign is
progressing under the leader
ship of W. H. Cobb, F. B. Cook
and S. C. Russell,, but no fig
ures are available yet. High
lands has always been known
to come - through with flying
colors and it is expected that
their share of the quota will be
more than reached.

Price Control
Survey By Ration Board j
For OPA, March 13-18
A drive to mobilize price con
trol forces among retailers and
consumers in Macon county, will
be launched March 13-18, under
the direction of the local war
price and rationing board, Dr.
W. E. Furr, chairman, announ
ced today.
The program calls for about
20 of price panel representa
tives to conduct a survey of
every food store in this area
with the main objective of help
ing retailers to understand nec
essary price control require
ments.
In the survey. 10 popular
market-basket food items will
be checked for selling and ceil
ing prices. A second check,
about two weeks later, will be
made of all food stores where
price regulations were discov
ered on the first check. Later,
storekeepers who were found
out of line during the second
survey will be asked to meet
the price panel of the local
board and deliberate violations
will be referred to the OPA
district office for enforcement
action.
raeanwnne, a training periua
of price panel assistants and
board representatives is under
way at local board headquar
ters, where preparations are be
ing made for the drive.
Dr, Furr said that one of the
primary jobs of the tocal board
now is to show retailers that
complete compliance with price
regulations will result in firm
control of living costs in this
area. He also emphasized that
the drive will serve to protect
storekeepers and their custo
mers from black market compe
tition.
At the same time, he added,
it will enable the board to
bring deliberate violators to the
attention of OPA enforcement
officials as a protection for the
great majority of honest mer
chants who are abiding by the
price control regulations.
