Last Rites Held For A. G. Edwards Funeral services for Alexan der G. Edwards. 83, who died at ' a Franklin hospital Sunday night following 18 months of declining health, were held at the residence Tuesday afternoon with Masonic honors by High lands Blue Ridge Lodge No. 435, and members of the Franklin Masonic Lodge. Rev. W. T. Med lin, Jr.. pastor of the Methodist church, was the officiating minister. Burial was in Horse Cove cemetery with Masons as pallbearers. Mr. Edwards was one of the pioneer citizens of this section and his family one of promi nence. He was born July 9, 1862, and spent his entire life within six miles of his birth place. He had been a lifelong member of the Methodist church. In 1883 he was married to Miss Alpha Speed, who sur vives. On October 11. last year, Mr. and Mrs. Edwards celebrat ed their 62nd wedding anni versary. Recruiting Agent Carl C. Sims will be in the United States Employment in the postoffice building on Mon day and Tuesday, May 28 and 29th. for tl\e purpose of re cruiting workers for the Navy Yards. Open Examination For Substitute Clerk The United States Civil Serv ice Commission announces an open competitive examination for the position of substitute clerk for filling vacancies in the post office at Franklin-, N. Matlock Held Monday Funeral services for J. Bowr man Matlock, 73, were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Snow Hill Methodist church with the Rev. W. Jack son Huneycutt, pastor of the Franklin Methodist church, of ficiating in the absence of the pastor, the Rev. D. P. Grant. He was assisted by the Rev. J. F. Marchman, the Rev. Norman E. Holden and the Rev. H. L. Phillips. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Dr. Edgar Angel, T. W. Angel, Jr., W. C. Burrell, J. H. Brookshire, Ras Penland and Ralph Pendlanri. Mr. Matlock died at his home at West's Mill Sunday morning following an illness of several months. He was a farmer and a member of the Snow Hill Meth odist church. He was married to Miss Lil lie I. Matlock, of the Leather man community, and to this union were born 13 children, 10 of whom still survive. They had lived In the Cowee com munity all their lives. He was a son of the late John and Jane West Matlock, and had been a member of the Snow Hill Methodist church for more than 30 years. Surviving are the widow, and the following children, Ora and John Matlock, of Marietta, Ga? Charles Matlock, of Winston Salem, Cpl. Jay B. Matlock and Pvt. W. Perry Matlock, both in the armed forces in Italy, and Sgt. Dorsey, Camp Wheeler, Ga., and four daughters, Mrs. J. Fred McGaha, and Mrs. Roy Cantrell, of West's Mill, Mis. H. L. Phillips, of Connelly Springs, and Mrs. Fred Moore, of Franklin, route 1; five sis ters, Mrs. Lizzie Potts, Bryson City, Mrs. Kansas Bryson, Sag inaw, Mich.) Mrs. C. A. Bryson, and Mrs. Cora Potts, West's Mill and Mrs. Jennie Jenkins, Boise, Idaho; and two brothers, Frank and Ben Matlock, of Bosie, Ida ho; 15 grandchildren and two great*grandchildren. Bryant Funeral Directors were in charge of the arrangements. P.-T.A. Siler, of West Asheville, formerly of Cartooge chaye. Macon county, and a j conductor on the Southern Rail I way for 32 years, died on Mon I day. He suffered a heart at tack on his train on April 18, and was taken off the train and placed in a hospital in Morganton where he remained for several days before he was able to be removed to his home. Mr. Siler who was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arch Siler, of Cartoogechaye, moved to Asheville 44 years ago and had been an employee of the railway for 40 years. He was a member of the Order of Rail way Conductors, West Asheville Lodge No. 565, A. F. & A. M., and Of the First Baptist church. Surviving are the widow, three sons and two daughters, two brothers, Will Siler, of Robbins villes, and Theo S. Siler, of Franklin, and two sisters, Mrs. G. G. Phillips, of Andrews, and Miss Eliza Slier, of Franklin. Family Relationship To Hoid Discussion Groups Mrs. Lease Bryson, of Culla saja, who is serving as County Chairman of Family Relation ship in the home demonstra tion club program of Macon county, has announced that discussion groups will be held for teen-age boys and girls for the parents May 29-31. Mrs. Virginia Sloan Swain, Family Life Specialist, of the Extension Service of State Col lege, Raleigh will lead the dis cussion groups. Mrs. Swain at tended the County Council of Home Demonstration Clubs held at the Agricultural Building in March at which time definite plans were set up for the work in this county. The Parent-Teachers Associa tiqn of the Franklin high school has requested Mrs. Swain to lead group discussions in the Agri cultural Building the after noons of May 30-31. Boys and ffirls of the high school will at tend. George Hill, principal of the high school and Mrs. R. S. Jones, program chairman of the P.-T. He gave an organ concert while in Dayton. Lieut. Lloyd Kingsberry, sur geon in the United States Army stationed at Oalesburg, 111., was an overnight guest of Mr. and Mrs. T. W.
