WII.EY-BACMGARNER Miss Sarah Margaret Wiley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Wiley of Highlands, became the bride of Mr. Roy Prue Baumgarner in a ceremony at the home of the officiating min ister, Rev. Frank Brown, on No vember 17 at five o'clock in the aiternoon, in the presence of a small number of relatives and friends. The bride wore a blue tail ored suit with black accessories and a corsage of red roses. Her only ornament was a mother of-pear pin, gift of the bride groom, who brought it from the South Pacific. Mia. Baum garner is the youngest daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley and is a graduate of Highlands high schoof, class of 1945. Mr. Baumgarner is the son o. the late R. B. Buupigarner of Cashiers. He was recently dis charged after five years of service in the U. S. Army. The first three years he served with the Alaskan Scouts, the last two with the 503rd parachute infantry in the South Pacific. After repeated attempts to enlist in the armed forces fol lowing his 18th birthday last January, Harold Speed, son of Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Speed, was accepted by the army under the draft and reported to Fort Bragg last week. Dr. Joseph C. Msdiin, Jr. Norman West of Franklin has accepted a position on the High lands school faculty, succeeding the Rev. W. T. Medlin, Jr., who was transferred to Robbinsvillo by the annual Methodist can I icrence in October. Mr. West ; had two years of teaching expe 1 rience in the county before en jtering the U. S. Navy, from I which he was discharged on November 2. While in High lands, Mr, West will be at home at the Prince Boarding house on Fourth street, ! Cook and the Misses Mary Bascom and Beverly Cook returned Sun day afternoon from a weekend visit in Greenwood, S. C. They were accompanied home by Mr. Cook's nephew, Lieut. Frank Cheatham, who has recently re turned from 36 months overseas service. Dr. Thorn N. Carter returned home Tuesday after conducting a week's service in the Federal penitentiary for women at Lit tle Rock, Ark. His daughter, Miss Anne Carter, met him in Atlanta. Wayne Hicks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hicks, has en listed in the coast artillery corps for a three year period. Corporal Richard Pearson has arrived home, having received his discharge from the Army at Fort Bragg. He was a member of the famous 83rd Thunderbolt Division, nicknamed the "Rag Tag Circus" during its historic rush to the Elbe ahead of its armored protection, making and holding the bridgehead for con tact with the Russians. Highlands PTA To Feature Program On Character Building Conforming with styite and national P. T. A. programs, the December meeting of the High lands P. T, A. will leatuis a program on "Character Build ing ', it has been announced by Mrs. Thomas C. Harbison, pres ident. The meeting will be held Tuesday afternoon, December 4. at 3:15 o'clock in the science room at the school. At the No vember meeting of the paient teacher association, Mrs. A: Rockwell Nail explained briefly the scholarship offered by the Jane S. McKimmon educational loan fund for girls who are in terested in a college education in home economics. This fund is available only to girls from the rural districts of the state who are able to present suffix cient creilits from an accredit ed high school, and who are students in North Carolina col leges. Mrs. Nail stated that preference would be given 4-H club girls, and that ro loan would exceed $200 annually. The North Carolina Federa tion of Home Demonstration !
