BIRTHDAY DINNER FOR 4
HELD AT TIPPITT HOME
Mrs. Adam Tippett, her two
sons, Ralph and Jess Tippett,
of Franklin, Route 3, and a ;
son-in-law, Vaughan Coggins,
of Olenvllle, were honored with
a birthday dinner at the home
of Mrs. Tippett Sunday, Janu
ary 20.
While the birthdays of the
four do not fall on the same
, day, they all come in the month
ot January, and this was the
first opportunity Mr. and Mrs.
Tippett had had to have their
children with their families
present at one time.
Those attending besides the
honorees and their families
were Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Tip
pitt and children, of Leather
man; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Tip
pitt and children, Franklin,
Route 3; Mrs. Grace Matthews
and family of Whittier; and
Mr. and Mrs. Vaughan Cog
gins atld children, of Glenville.
There were 21 grandchildren
present.
Personal Mention
Miss Nancy Jones, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Gilmer A.
Jones, left Monday for New
York City. Miss Jones plans to
enter New York university,
where she will study journalism.
Mr. and Mrs. Newell Garner
and family, of Alcoa, Tenn.,
were here over the week-end,
as the guests of Mr. Garner's
mother, Mrs. C. L. Garner, at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. T.
W. Phillips.
S Sgt. Howard Barna[d, just
back from nearly a year in the
China-Burma-India theater, ar
rived in Franklin Tuesday to
spend a furlough with his wife,
the former Miss Marie Morris,
and relatives. He expects to be
discharged from the service
when he reports at Fort Bragg,
at the expiration of his fur
lough.
Miss Rebecca Nail, of High
lands, who underwent an opera
tion at the Angel hospital, is
reported to be getting along
very nicely.
Mr. and Mrs. George B. Pat
ton returned to their home in
Raleigh Monday after spending
the latter part of the week in
Franklin with relatives and
friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred G. Duvall
have moved into a napartment
at Mrs. C. T. Blaine's on Har
rison avenue.

Mrs. John O. Wall and son,
Henry, have returned to their
home in Elberton, Ga., after
spending a week with Mrs. Wall's
mother, Mrs. H. O. Cozad, at
her home on Harrison avenue.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Wood have
returned to their home on Pal
mer street after spending two
weeks at points in Florida.
Virgil H. Willis, S. F. 3/C, who
has been in the South Pacific
for the past 12 months, has re
ceived his discharge from the
navy and is now at home on a
visit with his parents, Mr; and
Mrs. Fred Willis, Franklin,
Route 3. Mr. Willis spent 19
months in the service, 12
months of it on the U. S. S.
Barnwell.
Miss Jeanette Harrison and
Miss Emma Lou Hurst, who are
attending Mars Hill college,
Mars Hill, spent a few days last
week with their parents, Mr.,
and Mrs. Earl Harrison and Mr.
and Mrs. Horace C, Hurst, at
their homes, Franklin, Route 1.
Miss Harrison had as her guest
Miss Nancy Wilcox, of Boone,
a senior at Mars Hill college.
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Hol
combe, of Asheville, came over
Tuesday to attend the funeral
of Mrs. Lola P. Barrington.

FORD, JR. Mrs, Crawford is
the former Miss Thelma Eliza
beth Baldwin, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Don J. Baldwin of
Franklin, Mr. Crawford is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester
Crawford of Franklin. They
were married January 12, and
are residing in Sylva.
Nantahala
The four-months old infant of
Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Grant, of
this section, died Tuesday of
last week, after an illness of
about two hours. The child is
survived by the parents, the
grandparents, Mr! and Mrs,
Henry Grant, and a number of
other relatives. The Rev. P. H.
Passmore officiated at the fu
neral services. Burial was in
Union Hill cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Dills, of
Wesser Creek, recently visited
Mrs. Dills' parents here.

gan have announced the birth

FORD MANN EXPECTS NAVY
DISCHARGE NEXT WEEK
Ford Mann, pharmacist's mate
third class, expects to receive
his discharge from the navy at
the separation center at Nor
folk, Va., next week, relatives
have learned. Mr. Mann is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. J., J.
Mann and the husband of the
former Miss Viola G-oforth, all
of Franklin, Route 2. Last sta
tioned at Hingham, Mass.. he
has had 22 months of navy
service.

Mr. and Mrs. Samuel J. Mur
ray, of Iotla street, have an
nounced the marriage bf their
daughter. Miss Louise Murray,
to Fred Garland Duvall. son of
Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Duvall. of
Franklin, Route 3. ,
The wedding ceremony was
performed Friday afternoon,
January 18, at 4 o'clock at the
Baptist parsonage in Clayton,
Ga., with the Rev. D. D. Harris,
pastor of the Clayton Baptist
church, officiating, using the
double ring ceremony,
The bride wore a three-piece
suit of Copenhagen blue, with
black and white accessories. Her
shoulder corsage was of gar
denia.
Mrs. Duvall is a graduate of
the Franklin High school and
the Franklin Commercial school,
class of 1943. She also was grad
uated from the Ashevilie Radio
school, and worked in radio in
New Jersey and Dayton, Ohio,
for two years. She has been em
ployed as operator the West
ern Carolina Telephone ex
change, Franklin, for the past
several months.
Mr. Duvall, received his hon
orable discharge from the armed
forces in September, and is now
operating a filling station and
store near the Iotla bridge. He
entered the armed forces in
January, 1943, and was sent
overseas in May of the same
year. He participated in fight
ing in Normandy, northern
France, the Rhineland, Arden
nes and Central Europe. He
holds the good conduct medal
and on his European Theater
of operations ribbons are five
bronze service stars.
Immediately following the
wedding ceremony, Mr. and Mrs.
Duvall left for a short wedding
trip through Tennessee, and
are now making their home in
the Blaine apartment on Har
I rison avenue.

A daughter, Virginia Lorene,
was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ray
Edwin Justice, on Tuesday, Jan
uary 22, at the Angel hospital.
