Home Labor . Must Meet Farm Needs Labor which farmers them selves can supply or draw from adjacent communities must suf fice in the production of North Carolina crops this year it was announced by F 8. Sloan, state program leader of the State College Extension Service, who said that outside help from mi grants, toreign workers and "Bohunks" will be exceedingly short as compared with the vol ume avail ible in war years. No prisoners of war, who worked 312,485 man-days in 58 North Carolina counties last year, will be available for farm labor after June 1, Sioan reported. Meanwhile, it appeared doub ly imperative that state farm ers pool machinery and avail able labor on an exchange basis especially in perishable crops areas because of the prospect that farmer labor will demand higher pay as industry ups its wage scale. Sloan also reminded that many older and physically-hand icapped persons who filled in at firm work during wartime, now are leaving the farm in Increas ing numbers. Of the 9,661 boys and girls under 18 years of age who worked on farms in the state last year, many will not return this year because the patriotic appeal enhanced by the waf now has been lost. On the basis of figures avail able thus far. Sloan declared, it is expected that less than one In 10 former farm boy veterans will return to farms in this state. Brunswick County Agent J. E. Dodson reported that of 16 farm lads who entered the services during the war from one community in that county, all have since been discharged from service but only one has gone back to the farm. Grapes, Raspberries, Strawberries and Ornamentals for Spring Planting SEE WALTER A. STEELE At Press Office Box 164, Franklin, N. C. Here Are Tipe For Handling Beef Cattle ! Noting that several thousand | baby beef calves are now being fed out for spring and fall fat stock shows by farm lads in every section of the state, H. I Bruce Butler, assistant Wake County farm agent, says that | "by this time all calves should be on full feed," using one of ! the home-mixed feeds such as the following: Eight pounds of cracked corn, two pounds cracked oats ihd one pound of cotton seed meal. The above ration mixture is preferred, Butler reports, adding that the following may be used if oats are not available: Ten pounds of corn and cob meal with one pound of cotton seed meal. I Butler explained that "full feed means keeping feed before the calf in a trough about 14 ; Inches above the ground with a box containing loose table salt j along side. The calf should be taught to walk slowly beside Its handler, Butler continued, indicating that a rope halter handled from the calf's left side Is a helpful teaching Instrument. The young animal should be exercised and trained out of doors as the weather permits, the assistant agent said, and its coat combed regularly to remove dead hair. The calf should be treated monthly with a sulphur - rotenone mixture to control lice and warbles. Neat, accurate records of the . animal's growth and progress is a vital part of production, But ler concluded. State College Ar. swers Timely Farm Questions Q. What is the prospect for additional farm labor in North Carolina this year? A. Prisoners of war are out. Very few veterans are returning to farms; many older persons , and those physically handicap ; ped will be unable to help out ! this year. Little assistance can I be expected from migrant and foreign workers, so it appears that local labor will have to serve the purpose. Q. What is the veteran's out | look for starting in the poultry j business? A. Veterans' prospects as be ginners in poultry production are probably a shade better than for non-veterans because of government assistance but no new poultry business should be started unless the operator | has first obtained a trustworthy guarantee that sufficient pro tein feed will be available for feeding out the flock. the farm labor problem this year," Sloan said, "is to urge farmers to increase efficiency by pooling resources." ?
