Findlay Asks Cooperation , By JOHN D. FINDLAY Commissioner of Game and , Inland Fisheries The future of the wildlife in North Carolina calls for cooper- | ative action. There is no more serious problem today facing the lover of the out-of-doors than is this subject. Too often in dealing with such an important natural resource as wildlife we are apt to think in terms of one or two years instead of 15 or 20. We forget that generations to come should have the enjoyment of our wildlife heritage just as we have it today. We let per sonal grievances become para mount and forget the wild ani mals involved. Speaking bluntly, too often' we "can't see the woods for the trees". In whose hands lies the fu ture of this resource? Under our present state Governmental or ganization. this is in the hands of the State of North Carolina under the direct supervision of the game and fish division of the Department of Conservation 1 and Development. The functions of that division are carried on through the use of funds paid in by the hunters and fisher men of North Carolina, and those funds will amount to ap proximately $450,000 this year. It is my duty as commissioner of that division to spend these j funds wisely and well and I am going to carry out that duty to the best of my ability. ' regardless of any hindrance, i whether deliberate or thought less. Our present program is sound i and is as good as the best in I this country. It is patterned after what every wildlife ad- ' ministrator knows to be need ed in the management of wild life resources. But will that alone meet the need? Obviously not ? the need will be met through the judicious handling of that program, and It is at this point that the future of wildlife conservation in this state hangs in the balance. I say to you hunters and fish ermen ? you lovers of the great outdoors? that you can tip that balance. If you get behind this I program, regardless of person- I Tellico S. W. Miss Florence Sherrill showed us how to plan in advance to build homes and lay out plans to beautify our homes and yards. As a result of these meet ing, a new flagstone walk is in process of building, and there are many more projects that will be accomplished soon. Especially are we interested in growing more corn to the acre. Jesse Cook and C. B. Enloe of Bryson City, acid wood con tractors, are here this week erecting camp to move into to begin their work. Miss Lona Cook is here from Lowell, N. C., visiting home folks. George Rogers, of Whittier, was a visitor here last week. Adam Tippett and family, of Iotla. were here recently. To stand still in this program for only a few years will be disastrous. It's up to you and me ? after all it's our program. If it fails, it's our loss. EYES EXAMINED ? GLASSES FITTED DR. ALDEN C.
