RUES HELD FOR MRS. ETTA WOOD Life-Long Resident 0? County Dies After Brief Illness Final rites for Mrs. Etta Wood, 76, of near Highlands, who died March 14, were held Saturday morning at 11 o'clock at the Buck Creek Baptist church. The Rev. Oscar C, Nix, of Sa tulah, Ga.. officiated, and bur ial followed in the church cemetery. The pallbearers were Tom Moss, N. F. Rogers. George Robinson, Erastus Wood, Ezra Shook and 8tanley Tllson. Mrs. Wood died at the Angel clinic here on Thursday morn ing at 7 o'clock, following an illness of two days. Death was attributed to a stroke of apo plexy suffered on Tuesday at her home. Mrs. Wood, a life-long resi dent of Macon County, was born in November, 1870, a daughter of the late Tuck and Nancy Shook. On April 15,. 1885. she was married to John Thomas Wood, who died several years ago. She was a member of the' Buck Creek Baptist church. Surviving are seven children: Leonard Wood, Highlands; Mrs. Dollie Tllson, Flint, Mich., Mrs. Cora Rogers, Highlands; Mrs. Alice Moss, Frankllfc; Mrs. Elva Queen. Akron. Ohio, and Mrs. Mary Barnes, Lenoir; 20 grand children; 14 great-grandchild ren; four brothers; and one sister. Potts funeral directors were in charge of the arrangements. Miss A. W. Howard Rides Down Ways At Ship Christening Miss Anna Will Howard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Lee Howard, of Dillard, Ga., Route 1, was one of the 50 per sons out of 15,000 employes of the Navy yard at Charleston, S. C., who were presented with i guest tickets, permitting them to ride down the ways at the launching of the destroyer tender U. S. S. Bryce Canyon, on March 7. Miss Howard has been em ployed at the shipyard since June, 1945, as secretary to the personnel supervisor in the shlpfitter division. Accompanying Miss Howard on the destroyer was her aunt, 1 Mrs. Carl Howard, of Charles ton and Franklin. PLAN HOME-COMING MEET AT GOLD MINE CHURCH A home-coming service will be held at the Gold Mine Holi ness church on Sunday, March 31, from 10 a. m. until 5 p. m., it was announced by the Rev. A T. Abbott, the pastor. Several ministers wll^speak. and visitors from the Walhalla assembly and a trio from the Holmes Bible college at Greenville, S. C., will be present. Doyle Clay, of Murphy, who has just returned to the States after two years overseas. Carl D. Moses, principal of the Hlgdanvllle school, and Mrs. Lovicia Moses, teacher in the school, entertained their school basketball team last Friday night with a party at the schoolhouse. Games were played and refreshments were served. ! Everyone reported an enjoyable time. Mr. and Mrs. Octavius Mc Dowell plan to go to Pontlac, Mich., next week, where Mr. McDowell has employment with ' General Motors. Mr. and Mrs. John Dalton left for Pontiac, Mich., Friday. Mrs. J, T. Bryson, who has been quite 111 with flu, is re ported to be much improved. Charlie Anders has returned from Johnstown, Penn., where he has been visiting relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Suttle have sold their home to Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Higdon. Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Clark made a business trip to At lanta, Ga., Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Womack have almost completed their at tractive rock house on the Sell er's farm. While they are na tives of this county, they have made their home in Sylva for the past 16 years, and the peo ple of our community are de lighted to have them with us again. W. J.
