DAN K. MOORE
Candidate for Solicitor
We think the vote.rs-*-and particularly, the
veteran voters ? oi Macon County should know
something about the service record ol DAN K.
MOORK. one of the candidates for Solicitor
in the coming primary.
DAN MOORK is a married man of forty
vears of age. He had been practicing law lor
sixteen years when, about three years ago, not
withstanding the fact that he was a married
maii with two children, he volunteered tor
service in the U. S. Army.
He spent approximately two years in the
service as an enlisted man, a large part .of it
at the battle front in Kurope. and has only
recent lv returned to his law practice which he
broke up to enter the service of his country.
MR. MOORK is an able lawyer and a gentle
man, as his father. Judge Fred Moore, was be
fore him. He is the only one of the candidates
for solicitor who saw service in this war. He !
worked two years for his country on an en
listed man's pay.
We felt (hat when they knew the facts the . J
people of Macon Count v .would want to give
a World War II veteran the preference we
V think he deserves.
This advertisement was not solicited by Mr.
Moore. It is sponsored and paid for by Veteran
supporter's of Macon County.

A Statement to the Democratic
Voters of Macon County
I believe the people are entitled to know, how'
a candidate stands. I, therefore, make the fol
lowing statement to the Democratic voters ol
M aeon County:
1. If nominated and elected as Macon County
representative. I will go to Raleigh as the rep
resentative of all the people. of this county, and
will work for what I believe to be to the best
interests of the state ;itid the county.
2. I will, as far as humanly possible, be
guided by the wishes of the people, who ARh
the government.
3. Honesty compels me to say frankly that
there are many., things I might wish to do
which I cannot. Such matters as highways,
schools, old age assistance, and control of al
coholic beverages are', generally speaking,
state-wide, and policies on these matters are
determined not by one, but by a majority of
the members of the General Assembly. I can
and do promise, however, to work for better
secondary roads throughout the state. I can
and <lo promise to do all in my power for bet
ter schools, in this and every county in the
state. I can and do promise to cast my vote for
a more liberal allowance for old age assistance.
And 1 can and do promise to work for the pro
posed referendum on alcoholics ? the people
have a right to decide.
4. I am told that questions have been raised
about my record at the draft board. That rec
ord is no secret. I was under the draft age in
World War 1. Never did I ask the draft board
for so much as a day's deferment in World
War 2. I \vas classified as 1-A for a long pe
riod, and expected and was prepared to go to
the armed forces. The only reason I did not
was that the top age Was lowered within a
month of the time I \vould have been drafted, >
and I was classified as over-age.
5. Whatever the outcome of the Democratic
primary May 25, I will exert every effort to
secure the election of every nominee of the
Democratic party in the general election.

To the Democratic Voters
of Macon County:
Before 1- made my announcement as a can
didate for Sheriff 1 gave the matter serious
consideration as I know the office is a very
important one for Macon County. In the first
place it needs a man of experience and ma
ture judgment as well as one who is not
afraid to enforce the law.
under Sheriff Charles Ingrain, for six years
?1 am 46 years old. 1 served as a deputy
'and during that time was very active in per
forming the duties required of me. 1 can Jfl
truthfully say that during that time 1 favored I
no individual hut undertook to carry .out my V
duties impartially and with a view to keep- ?
ing down criminal offenses. 1 have no hesi- 1
tancy to say that 1 will make every effort,
possible to continue such efforts if 1 am elected
and 1 will also use the best judgment possible
in selecting deputy sheriffs to serve under me.
1 have been a lifelong Democrat as have
been- my people before me. In the event I am
elected 1 shall continue such party affiliation
and it" I am not successful in securing the
nomination 1 will give all my support to the
nominee of my party in the general election. ?
I would like to see and talk to every man
and woman in the County but that is impos
sible. I will try to see as many as I can and I
will be very grateful indeed for your vote in
the coming primary to be held May 25th.
Fred D. Cabe
To the Democratic Voters
of Macon County:
As you see in another column
of The Franklin Press, I am
seeking the nomination for
Representative in the next Gen
eral Assembly of North Caro
lina. Before I decided to make
this race I was asked by good
citizens of almost every district
in the county to make the race.
I am 63 years old and for 42
years I have voted and worked
for the Democratic Party in
Macon County and anywhere
that party felt the need of my
service, even two or three trips
to Raleigh on my own pocket
book. And as a result of such
work and cooperation with the
Democratic Party, I have lived
to see our good state climb to
a much higher place among the
other states of the Union.
I know and you know ^that
a Representative can do only a
limited amount during a session
of the Legislature and I have
been asked many questions
about what I would do should
I go. And I feel that it's as
much in what I don't do or
undo as what I do in new leg
islation. My answer to some was
that it would be better for my
wife to tie me in the chimney
corner during the Legislature
than to pass some, not all, of
the Laws that have been pass
ed the last 12 to 15 years.
Should I be the successful
candidate, I shall feel that I
am a servant of the people of
Macon County and shall call to
gether a representative body of
citizens from every district in
the county to the courthouse
between the election and the
meeting of the assembly that we
may discuss the various needs
of the county, that I may know
what the people really want,
then go to Raleigh with a de
termination to pass some of the
most needful, constructive laws.
I have been asked many times
how r stand on the following
questions;
No. 1. Old Age and Dependent
Children's Assistance.
Ans. I favor making up bud
get to properly care for all on
the list, then adding to the
budget enough to care for
emergency cases that come up
between the time of making out
the budget.
No. 2. In Regard to Sheriff's
Pay Should the Office Change
Hands.
Ans. I had nothing to do with
its passing and shall leave it as
It is, regardless of who may be
elected sheriff.
No. 3. The Question of Beer
and Wine.
Ans. I believe our Governor
said he would give us a refer
endum on beer and wine six
months after peace was de
declared. The terrible guns of
war have hushed their roar and
I can't see any reason for wait
ing longer and I favor a refer
endum on beer and wine. Now
not sometime In the far future,'
let the people say what they
want.
No. 4. School Bug Drivers.
Ans. X am In favor and shall
fight for a school bus driver
not to be paid less than $50
per month. That said driver
shall be 21 or more years old,
of good morals, and a total ab
stainer from strong drink.
No. 5. Roads.
Ans. I shall do all that with
in one lies to get a gravel road
through all the communities,
I large and small in M^con Coun
ty at the earliest possible time.
We all know that the SHC has
done wonders in. building roads
for the last 20 years, or more
Also we know the last four
years we all had to give all our
attention to the winning of the
war but that is over and these
rural roads should have some
I thing done and done now. And
i leave the highways alone, only
the patching crew. The products
of our farms and forests are
needed; let's have a road J
market. m
No. 6. Teacher Retiremci ?
Fund.
Ans. While the school teac ?
ers only get a meager livii.M
while on active duty in U m
school room I feel that the 9|
should have more than that
per day retirement that should
read at least $150 per day, and
$2 .would be more like it.
No. 7. Board of Education.
Ans. The way X feel about this
is- that these five men should
be of our best. They should
know the value of a dollar
spent in a school, building,
roofing, lumber, roads, grading,
house seats, school supplies, or
for any other school purposes
whatsoever, and as they are
going to have to spend a lot of
time in the next two to four
years working out our school
program I favor paying them
for every hour spent on their
official duty In behalf of the
school children of Macon Coun
ty. We have a big problem be
fore us. No one man in the
county or out is competent to
spend a half million dollars of
tax money, but six level heads
with the hearty cooperation of
the citizens of the county can
carry It out to a final and glor
ious conclusion that will be a
monument to our good county
and place us up in rank with
other good counties of the
State.
In closing let me say I will
be glad to answer any and all
questions and I hope to your
satisfaction. In order that you
may know my feelings toward
North Carolina, I give you the
following:
Since back In the days of
Aycock old Tar Heel has done
Its best. I hardly think that
she's surpassed in North, South,
or West with education, health,
Industry, highways, farming.
Let's keep her marching on.
Here's hoping that all get reg
istered properly on the books.
And that you go to the polls
and cast your ballot. If for me. 1
I will do my best to serve you I
to the very best of my ability.*
You, the voters, prescribe antfifl
I will take the medicine, even?
though It be bitter. (Closed
with my theme song) I want to
go there, I do. ,
J. M. RABY.
