DIES AT AGE OF 99 YEARS West'# Mill Farmer Once Was Body Servant To Charleston Man James Washington Deal, Ne gro, died at his home in the West's Mill community May 2 was 99 years old. Barn in Charleston, 8. C., Oc tober 22, 1846, he had lived in Macon county since about the age of 13 years, when he was brought to this county and sold as a slave to James Deal, of the Holly Springs section for $1,200. He was a former body serv ant to Col. Clinton Huger dur ing the first year of the War Between the States, and wit nessed the opening of the war in Charleston harbor. Following the war, he settled in the West's Mill community, where he 'bought a farm of 160 | acres. It took him eight years to pay for this farm and after the crops were made each year, he would return to Charleston to make a ' stake'' to pay on the farm. He was twice married, and is survived by his widow and three children by the latter marriage, and four children by the for tner. Also surviving are 35 grandchildren, 10 great-grand children, and one great-great grandchild. Funeral services were held at the Pleasant Hill Methodist church Sunday afternoon, May 5, with the Rev. Former Teacher In Negro Schools Claimed By Death William Bessmon Harper, Negro, *73, died at his home on Green street Monday -of last week, following an illness of several months. , Funeral services were held at the Pine Grove Baptist church near the Iotla Bridge last Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. At the age of 18 years he began teaching in the public schools in Macon county, and when he Retired nine years ago, he had taught in every Negro school ? in Macon county. He was also a farmer. He joined the Methodist Episcopal church at the age of 19 and remained in that church until in 1905, when he joined the Pine Grove Baptist church. He also served as a deacon in the church. He was twice married. The first marriage was to Hattie Deal, and the latter marriage was to Martha Parish, who sur vives.
