Friday of last week, Sheriif
Bradley reported.
Three men were at the still
at the time o! the raid. One of
the three, Robert N. Lamb, was
arrested, while the other two
made their escape, the sheriff
said.
Twenty-five gallons of beer
was destroyed; 20 gallons of
whiskey was also found, as well
as 800 gallons of sugar and 30
empty sugar sacks.

J. T. Houston
At Buck Creek
James Thomas Houston, 85,
well known citizen and life-long
resident of Macon County, died
at his home in the Buck Creek
community, near Highlands,
May 12, following an illness of
10 days.
Funeral services were held
the following morning at 11
o'clock at the Buck Creek Bap
tist church. The Rev. J. A. Baty,
Baptist minister of Highlands,
officiated, assisted by the Rev.
Oscar Nix, of Satolah. Ga. In
terment followed in the church
cemetery.
A farmer, he was a member
of the Buck Creek Baptist
church.
Surviving are two sons, Rob
ert Houston, of Highlands, and
William Houston, of Buck Creek;
one daughter, Mrs. Susie Callo
way, of Highlands; two broth
ers, PinK Houston, and Frank
Houston, both Qf Charleston,
Tenn., two sisters, Mr#, Ellen
Flowers, of Rlngo, Ga.. and Mrs.
Sallie Russell, of Hiawassee, Ga.; '
17 grandchildren; and 39 great- |
grandchildren.

The Macon County Baptist
Ministerial association will meet
in conference on Monday. May ,
27. at noon at the Coweta Bap
tist church, six miles south of
Franklin on the Georgia high
way, it has been announced by
the Rev. W. C. Pipes, secretary
and treasurer. Following lunch
served by the ladies of the
church, the program will open
with the devotional by the Rev.
Raleigh Guffey. A short busi
ness session will be held, after
which the Rev. Frank Reed will
deliver the principal message.
The meeting will close with
an open forum.

Smith and Walter Dean, deputy
sheriff, found another copper
still, of 60 gallons capacity, lo
cated on the government prop
erty near the Kinsland farm on
Wayah Mountain, that had been
in recent operation.
A small quantity of whiskey
was found at the still, and very
little beer was destroyed. There
was no one at the still at the
time the raid was made, the
officers said.

lin, who held the rank of cap
tain" in the army air forces
when he was discharged ia.t
fall, has just been notified tnat
he has been 'awarded iha An
Medal.
Capt. Crawford, who was a
pilot instructor, stationed at
Moore Field, Mission, Texas, is
one of the few army airmen to
win the coveted award lor duty
other than combat. Jt was
awarded, the citation points out,
"for exceptional pr6feas.onui
skill and devotion to duty shown
in the face of hazard and per
sonal risk", and becuuse his
services "made an outstanding
contribution to the over-all war
effort.
The son of Mrs. A. R. Higdon,
Mr. Crawford was in service from
August. 1941, to November, 1945.
and during most of that period
he was an instructor. He is
connected with the Franklin
Hardware company.

a 1942 Plymouth convertible
coupe, carrying 48 gallons of
non-tax paid whiskey, on U. S.
23 last Friday morning. They
reported that the car was driv
en by William Clayton Jiinson.

passenger, were taken into cus
tody The former posted a $300
cash bond, while the latter,
failing to give bond, was held
