Tourist Gold Has Paved
Pan-American Highway
MEXICO CITY ? The Pan
American Highway is Hearing
completion alter 20 years 01
dreams, planning and work.
Within the next two and a hall
years, a tourist in Washington,
Buenos Aires or San Francisco
may be able to crank up his
car and drive 11.200 miles aver
all-weather roads linking the
Americas.
The road is paved with tour
ist gold. The Mexican tourist
department estimates that na
tion's tourist business alone at
upwards of 250,000.000 pesos
($50,000,000) annually.
And business is picking up.
During the war years the Pan
American Highway south from
the U. 8. border to Mexico City
practically was deserted. Tour
ist automobiles now are cross
ing the international boundary
at the rate 3,000 a month.
Most of the traffic from the
North stops at Mexico City.
From Buenos Aires, the south
ern terminus, few tourists ven
ture beyond Chile after crossing
the Uspallata Pass high in the
Andes.
In six months, from Novem
ber through April, 1946, 18,040
tourists' automobiles entered !

Lure Tourists' Gold
Construction of the Pari Amer
ican Highway has hefped gov
ernments realize that tourist
business is good business and
many of them have sent offic
ials to Mexico City to learn
how to get a portion of the
gold that rides on rubber tires.
Of even greater importance
is the economic effect the high
way will have on each nation
and its neighbors. The Pan
American Highway linking the
nations together eventually will
lead to construction of farm
to-market roa;ds and greater ec
onomic interdependence among
the Americas.
United States automobile
manufacturers are allotting a
portion of th"eir production to
Latin America to meet the
strong bid of British manufac
turers for the market, but a car
in every Latin American garage
must, of necessity, await the day
when costs are in line with
wages.
American-made cars sell for
double to triple the U, S. mark
et price and used cars with 50,
to 100,000 miles of wear bring
prices comparable with new
cars in the U, S. The average j
daily wage ranges between five
and 10 pesos ($1 to $2).
Looking at the highway south
bound there are about 1.156 ;
miles completed from the Mex
ican border at Nuevo Laredo
through Mexico City to Oaxaca
and some 50 miles beyond. From
there to Guatemala it is hardly
more than a trail.
Guatemala has a good road
from border to border, but Mex
ico has 187 miles to finish, Hon
duras 60, El Salvado . 20 and
Panama 100. Completion of
these stretches will give an all- j
weather highway from the U. S. j
border to Panama City, a dis
tance of 3,250 miles.
Engineers believe it will be
several years before Panama
City is linked with Colombia ? a
distance of 200 miles through
wild jungles, much of which
has not even been surveyed.
Much must be done to the
South.
Engineers estimate that it
will take two and one-half
years to complete the highway
and the cost will approximate
$25,000,000. When construction is
finished the intrepid tourist will
be able to drive from Fairbanks,
Alaska, over the Trans-Cana
dian and Pan American High
ways to Buenos Aires, a distance
of 14,479 miles.
The use of postal cards was |
first suggested in 1865 by the
director of the Royal Prussian
