MKS. SLOAN IS HOSTESS AT

Mrs. W. W. Sloan was hostess
to Sloan relatives and a few '
close friends at a picnic supper
at Camp Arrowood last Friday
evening. Forty-four persons en
joyed the family gathering,
which was marked by group
singing on the piazza in the
evening.
Mrs. Sloan and members of
her family have been spending
a 10-day vacation at the camp.
Her son, Fred S. Sloan, and Mrs.
Sloan and their two children,
came from Raleigh, and her
daughter, Mrs. James S. Mc
Allister, and Mr. McAllister and
their two sons, came from their
home in Maplewood, N. J. Both
families left the middle of the
week to return to their homes.
Also at the camp in the eve
nings was Mrs. Sloan's other
son, W. W. Sloan, of Franklin.

TRIP TO CALIFORNIA
Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Higdon
and Mr. and Mrs. Frank M.
Higdon have returned from a
six-week visit in Los Angeles
and Sacramento, Calif., with
their brother, Fred Higdon, and
family, and sisters, , Mrs. Harry
Straine and family and Miss
Hazel Higdon. On their trip
they visited the Carlsbad Cav
erns, Yosemite Park, and Ju
arez, Mexico, where they attend
ed a bull fight.
Miss T. Sloan, of Atlanta,
spent the week-end here with
mother, Mrs. J, S. Sloan.
W. N. Sloan, of Atlanta, spent
several days here last week, vis
iting his son and daughter-in
law, Mr. and Mrs. Bob S. Sloan,
and other relatives.
T. H. Moore, who is working
Mrs. Katheryn Brown has re
turned to her home in Fort
Lauderdale, Fla., after a week's
visit here with ther parents,
Mr. and Mrs. J. N. MCJunkin.

Resigns From State Post
To Return To Franklin
George B. Patton, for the past
year general counsel (or the
State Highway and Public
Works commission, has resigned
that position and he and Mrs.
Patton have returned to their
home on Palmer street here.
Mr. Patton will return to Kal
eigh for a short time to take
care of some untinished busi
ness and help familiarize his
successor with the work. Upon
his return to Franklin, he plans
to resume the private practice
of law, and has taken the of
fices in the Bank of Franklin
building formerly occupied by
the late Dr. W. A. Rogeis.
Mr. Patton, who is well known
throughout the state, served
several years ago as North
Carolina assistant attorney gen
eral.

Former Macon Resident,
Dies In Georgia
Nffwton Silas Key, 46, of Cor
nelia, Ga., a former resident of
the Prentiss section, died sud
denly at the home of his par
enU, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Key, in
Clayton, Ga., Sunday, June 16.
? Funeral services were held at
the Mountain Grove Baptist
church in Cornelia, Ga.
Mr. Key and his father op
erated a cabinet shop and a grist
mill while living at Prentiss.
Surviving are three children,
Ernest, Herschel and Mack Key,
of Cornelia; his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. J. A. Key, of Cornelia.
Ga; three brothers, J. Robert
Key, Jerry D. Key and Warren
H. Key, of Clayton, Ga.; and
six sisters, Mrs. Mack Johnson,
Mrs. J. B. Walls, Mrs. Dorothy
Dickson, Mrs. Nobia Gregory,
Mrs. Amanda Henry and Mrs.
Effie Hunnicutt.

week for the separation center
at Fort Bragg, N. C., where he
will be discharged from the
service, it has been learned
here.

charged from the navy, accord
ing to word received here from
the separation center at Jack
sonville, . Fla.
Ga., and Mrs. Joseph Schneider,
of Detroit, Mich., were the house
guests 6t Mr. and Mrs. John

O. W. Parker, of Wrightsville,
Ga? spent a few days here with
his daughter, Mrs. Thomas W.
Porter, Jr., at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. T. W. Porter, Sr., re
cently.
Mrs. Thomas W. Porter, Jr.,
and two children, Eve and
Thomas, III, of Wrightsville,
Ga., are spending several weeks
here with Mr. Porter's parents,
Mr. and Mrs.. Thomas W. Porter,
Sr. Her husband is expected to
join them' in a few weeks, and
accompany them to Galveston,
Texas, where they will make
their home.

HENRY BATY NEW OPERATOR
OF HIGHLANDS STATION
Henry J. Baty has bought an
interest in the Highlands Super
Service Gulf Filling station on
the corner of Fourth and Main
streets, and is now in charge,
it was announced Tuesday. Mr.
Baty succeeds W. P. Hedden as
operator.
Recently the Gulf Oil com
pany exercised its option and
purchased tjie ground it has
been leasing from G. W. Marett
for the past several, years, cre
ating the unusual . situation of
owning the ground as well as
the attractive station in a town
the size of Highlands.
COMPLETES COURSE
Pvt. Tyndell L. Parrish, son
of C. W. Parrish, of Franklin,
Route 3, has completed eight
weeks of training as a surgical
technician at the medical de
partment enlistbd technicians'
school at Brooke Army Medical
center, Texas, according to an
announcement received here.
