. . . Next To Godliness
FRANKLIN is a tourist town, and anything that
makes it less attractive to the tourist inevitably
costs the town money. It cuts down our total in
come,5 exact lv as a new pest that destroyed our
corn or cabbage crops would cut down our total
income.
All of which is by way of suggesting that it is
costing this community hard, cold dollars ? and will
cost us more next season, and the season after ?
to indulge in the luxury of being dirty.
It is true that the situation was difficult during
the war. Admittedly, it is difficult still. But isn't it
truo that, during the war. we accustomed ourselves
to an unkept appearance we would not have toler
ated a few years ago?
Nor can you and 1 ask, "Why doesn't the town
board do something about it?" and let it go at
that. Because, while the streets aren't as clean as
they should be, they arc far better kept than some
vacant lots and even a few backyards.
The problem of finding a titan to cut weeds of
fers property owners an excellent excuse. But there
is no alibi for leaving property cluttered up with
paper, rusty tin cans, and broken glass. Anybody,
old or young, can pick up such things: and any->
body can break the habit of carelessly throwing
everv piece of trash that comes to hand into a
vacant lot or on the street. In other words, if we
can't get clean, at least we can get cleaner.
Let's clean ttjVa bit. It wfll pay in dollars ? and in
self-respect. And let's remember that cleanliness,
like charity, begins at home.
The OPA? And You
As this is written, the future of the OPA still is
uncertain. It appears to be fairly definite, though,
that an OPA with the broad powers that agency
had during the war is a thing of the past.
The inevitable result will be to place more re
sponsibility for the control of inflation upon the
individual. And every individual can do his part in
this big and vital job.
If he is a customer, he can refuse to pay unrea
sonably high prices for merchandise. That attitude,
on the part of even a small number of individuals,
will have its effect ? and quickly ? whether the man
ufacturer. the jobber, or the retailer is responsible
for the price boosts.
If he is a business man. he can influence the situ
ation in many ways, but chiefly by refusing to in
crease his present margin of profit. And the nearly
two-score Franklin firms that recently pledged
themselves to such a program showed their patrio
tism by that action.
They showed, too, sound common sense. For the
small business man would be one of the hardest hit
by inflation.
It is only human, of course, for a merchant to
want to get as hijjh a price as possible for an item
of merchandise. But to follow that practice today ,
would certainly be penny-wise and pound foolish.
For if a single merchant in Franklin raises the
price on a single item, it increases the cost of living
for everybody, and he is fairly certain ultimately to
reap higher prices on not one, but half a dozen
things that he must buy.
Doughty World
"The world do move".
And how knowledge spreads I
F'instance :
The word "daughter" appears three times in a
* newspaper release just issued hv a North Carolina
college, and in each case the word is spelled
"doughter".
Perhaps the student who prepared the news
article was impressed by the fact that the daugh
ters of men. in these modern days, have become
doughty, and that the word shhould be spelled ac
cordingly. If so, we're inclined to agree.
But we still wonder if North Carolina college
budgets fail to provide funds for the purchase of
dictionaries.
Economy makes happy homes and sound nations; instill It
deep.? Washington.
Wilful waste makes woeful want.? Thomai Fuller.
