Offices In: Franklin, ^or, rest City and Lumberton, N. C. Estimate Of Corn Yields Easily Made An easy method of estimat ing corn yields has been pre pared by Dr. Emerson Collins, in charge of Extension Agron omy at State college By the use of this method farmers can make a study of exactly what they are doing in corn produc tion and why yields per acre are not as large as they should be. The plan is to weigh the shucked corn on fifty running feet of row at about live or six places in the field to get aver age conditions. Then multiply j the weight of corn for the ! fifty feet by a certain factor, depending on the width 01 the row, and this gives the bushels of corn per acre. Dr. Collins took into consider ation the fact that field corn is rather high in moisture as com pared with commercial corn and other such matters in determ ining the " factor" to give bush els per acre from pounds of shucked corn per fifty feet ol row. Here are the factors: Multiply the weight of shucked corn from fifty running feet of row by 3.16 for 42 inch rows; 2.95 for 45 inch rows; 2.76 for foui foot rows; 2 21 for five foot rows; and 1.84 for six foot rows. The answer is bushels pei acre. Every farmer should get some yield calculations in his corn because he will make many val uable discoveries. First, he will discover that it takes many plants per acre to produce large yields, but if plants are increas ed, much larger amounts of plant food are needed. This calls for narrower rows than usual, clos er spacing in the drill, and much more fertilizer per acre. If he is growing a hybrid, he will fijid that there are no bar ren plants and that every plant ioes its best. Counting ears per fifty feet of running row and weighing It teaches valuable lessons.
