FOREST TIMBER TO BE SOLD ON BIDS Highest Offer Again To Determine Purchaser: Ceiling Eliminated Timber In the Nantahala Na tional forest hereafter wi.'.l be sold on an advertised, competi tive basis, it was announced this week at forest headquarters here. Prior to this, sales have been ftonducteci on a 1942 ceiling price basis, under the price stabiliza tion program, with the result that the Forest service fre quently had several bids at the same figure, and had to draw to determine the success ful bidder. With price ceilings being lifted, contracts will be awarded to the highest bidders in future. Chestnut extract wood will be the timber chiefly affected for the present, it was said. For, ; while a small amount of green timber will be sold, such as ; pine thinnings, the sale of most green timber has been suspended because of wartime over-cutting. Deteriorating dead chestnut stands, however, can be salvaged as extract wood, forest officials pointed out. attention to the fact that prices of the crop are relatively low and quality high. Total 1946 production has been estimated at 471.146.000 | bushels, which is 46 million bushels greater than the 1946 crop. This yield represents an average production of 167 bush els of potatoes per acre. The early and intermediate crops of Irish potatoes have already moved to market, Mr. Gardner said. It is the late crop, produced largely in the western part of North Carolina, and of course, throughout many of the northern states, which is in such abundant supply now There is not enough storage space for keeping the entire crop, and for that reason, an increased consumption by the i average family will be neces ' sary. j The USDA, the producers, distributors, and the State col lege extension service have join ed efforts In this drive to bring the supply to the attention of the buying public. Mr. Gardner pointed out that the housewife who buys and uses these potatoes liberally is not only preventing food waste at a time when such loss would be unfortunate, but she is also do ing her family a favor by using the potatoes In ? variety of ways to pick up her dinner I menus* CFL.
