BURIED IN NATIVE SOIL Billy Thomas Bateman's Funeral Rites Held At Aquone Billy Thomas Bateman, 20 year old Macon County youth who was drowned off the Eng lish coast the night of Novem ber 3, 1946, was laid to rest in his native soil last Saturday. A seaman second class in the navy, young Bateman lost his life when a small boat, to which he was assigned, struck an unlighted buoy and capsized. The boat was plying between the cruiser USS Spokane, the ship on which Bateman was stationed, and another vessel. The funeral services were conducted at the Aquone Bap tist church at 11:30 a. m., with the Rev. T. D. Denny, the pas tor, officiating. Interment fol lowed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Robert Park er, Don G. Allison, N. G. Dixon, Harold Enloe, the Rev. B. Hoyt Evans, Andrew Setser, Ford Duvall, and Jack Wood, all members of the American Leg ion. The body, which was recover ed December 5, was brought to ] the Potts funeral home here i last Friday, accompanied by I Ralph J. Ricketti, GM-3c, of Philadelphia, Penn. It remain I ed at the funeral home until Saturday morning. Seaman Bateman was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George F. Bateman, Franklin, Route 4, formerly of the Aquone section. He was born May 22, 1927, and received his education in the Aquone school and the Frank lin High school. Prior to entering service, he had been employed at Cagle's Cafe and in the shop of the Franklin Press. He is survived by his parents; seven brothers, Huell, Hubert, George, Jr., Howard, Mack, James, and Edward; and two sisters, Misses Laura and Wanda Bateman, all of the home. Potts funeral home was In charge of the arrangements. E. H. Franks Among Those In Business Here 50 Years Ago In last week's feature story on Franklin 50 years ago, It was impossible to list every firm do ing business here at that time, and only those were mentioned whom the then editor classed as "leading". One name was omitted, how ever, which should have been listed, that of E H. (Lish) Franks, since he was one of Franklin's pioneer business men. The story also failed to make clear, in referring to R. H. Jarrett and Sons as hotelmen, that the Franklin hotel of that firm was under the manage ment of H. H. (Ham) Jarrett. Cub Scouts To Meet On Sunday Afternoon The Club Scouts will meet Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock at the Methodist church, and R. E. McKelvey, cubmaiter, emphasized that all cubs and their parents are Invited. Any boy between the ages of nine and 11 who Is not a member also Is Invited to attend the meeting, and bring his parents along Baptist Pastors To Hold Meeting Here February 3 Pastors of the Macon County Baptist association will hold their next meeting February 3 at the Franklin church, when the Rev. W. L. Sorrells will lead a round table discussion. The Rev. R F. Reed will conduct tne devotional. Dr. Thom N. Carter was re cently named as the group's chairman for the coming year. Mr. Sorrells is the new vice chairman, and the Rev. G. E. Scruggs is secretary and treas urer.
