Experiments Envision Use Of Earth's Heat For Fuel Some day you may heat your home with heat pumped out of the earth. ' That is cne of the possibil ities of the heat pump research project being conducted by the Southern Research Institute The project is sponsored by 14 elec tric utilities, including the Nan tahala Power and Light com pany, through the Southeastern Electric Exchange, J. E. - S. Thorpe, Nantahala president, explained this week. The subject of many articles over the past 15 years and just on the verge of development for general use shortly befsre the outbreak of the war, the heat pump, which uses no fuel, is one of those post-war products that the householder will be able to buy during 1947, it was said. It is a single device which will both heat his home in winter and cool it In summer. It is estimated that about 8,000 units will be built In 1947. Basically, the heat pump is an enlarged version of the household refrigerator, whose mechanism is a heat pump which removes heat from the Inside of the refrigerator. The residence ? size heat pump is so constructed that it will either pump heat out of, or into, the house. The earth Is a possible source of heat that is adaptable to ef ficient heat pump throughout the southeast, it Is explained. The earth temperatures at a depth of 30 feet vary from about 57 degrees F. In Virginia to 70 degrees F. on the upper Gulf coast. This ground tem perature in Western North Car olina is about 61 degrees. For homes there are possibilities of drilling wells from which earth heat is extracted for home use. D. Grinnells, veteri narian for the Agricultural Ex periment station at State col lege. These parasites not only de vitalize the animals, causing lower production, but they also put the animals in such an un thrifty condition that they are subject to many diseases. And here's another reason why hog lice should especially be con trolled; hog lice can carry swine pox. Now what are some of the things that can be done to cor rect this situation? Dr. Grin nells suggests that all old bed ding be cleaned oUt regularly and that the quarters be dis infected from time to time. Then, hog lice and mange can be controlled by dipping, the use of insecticides and proper follow-up treatments. Lice, grubs, and the other parasites of cattle, which cut heavily into production, also need to be controlled. Sheep are especially subject to parasites, both external and internal. Sheep scab mites and sheep ticks can be killed by a program of dipping and sanita tion. Dr. Grinnells says that para site control with livestock pays real dividends in more pork and beef, more milk and butter, bet ter breeding stock, and larger net profits to the grower. Say: "I Saw it advertised in The Press." More than 6,000 beds for tuberculous veterans are avail able in 14 VA sanatoria throughout the country.
