NEWS ? PEOPLE MRS. CHAIN MARRIED TO LESLIE JOHNSON Mrs. Mae Crain and Leslie Johnson were married Monday night, February 24, at Clayton, Cia. Mrs Johnson is the widow ol the late Andy Crain of, bca.'y Mi. Johnson served about three years in the armed forces, two years of which were spent in Germany. FORMER MACON MAN WEDS TEXAS GIRL IN CALIFORNIA Miss Mary Belle Merrell, caughter of Mr and Mrs. W. A. Merrell, of Candian, Texas, be came the bride of Joseph Gibbs, son of Mrs. Florence Gibbs, of Baldwin Park, Calif., in a cere mony performed February 8 at the First Baptist church at Covina, Calif. The Rev George A. Thompson officiated. The groom was reared in the Cowee community. His mother, the former Miss Florence Shep herd, and family recently mov ed to California. Mr. Gibbs served four years in the army air forces. The bride was attired in a white gown, her lace veil drap ed from a coronet: She -carried a bouquet of sweet peas, cen tered with an orchid. The couple first met in an army hospital, where Mr. Gibbs was a patient and Miss Mer rell was an army nurse. MRS. CLARK HONORS YOUNG DAUGHTER ON 6th BIRTHDAY Mrs. Clyde Clark honored her daughter, Jacqueline, with a party last week, marking Jac queline's sixth birthday. Arrangements of gladioli, cal endulas, and snapdragons were used throughout the living room. After playing games, the 25 guests joined in singing "Happy Birthday" as the can dles on the birthday cake were lit. Personal Mention Lewis W Patton left Monday for a stay of about a month at Haines City and other points in Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Allen and small son, of Cosby, Tenn., are visiting relatives and friends in the West's Mill community. Gordon W Southard, of Lees burg, Fla., spent a few days here last week, visiting his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Bob South ard, of Route 1. On his return to Florida, he was accompanied by his mother. Mrs. Southard will spend sometime visiting her son and his family and also will visit her daughter and son-in law, Mr. and Mrs. Lamar Tomp kins. Mrs. J. S. Sloan returned home the latter part of last week, after a visit in Atlanta with her son. W. N. Sloan, and her daughter. Miss Tim Sloan. Judge George B. Patton re turned this week from Char lotte, where he held his first term of court as a special su perior court, judge. Mrs. G A. Jones, Jr., and young daughter left Wednesday to spend a month in St. Peters burg, Fla , with Mrs. Jones' par ents. R W. (Red i Welch, who un derwent an operation for ap pendicitis at Angel hospital February 24, was sufficiently re covered to return to his home Tuesday. Mrs W A. Rogers, who has been a patient at Angel hos pital for some time, has recov ered sufficiently to return to her home. Miss Annie Nell Jones, who underwent an appendix opera tion February 28 at Angel hos pital, is reported by hospital attendants to be doing nicely. Logan Allen, ADM 2/C, the adopted son of Mrs. Fannie Allen, has re-enlisted in the navy and is now stationed at Mayport, Fla. Miss Edna Will Mashburn.who is employed with the Southern Bell Telephone company in Asheville, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mashburn. Franklin, Route 1. Ed Slagle, of Boise, Idaho, who has been visiting relatives here since December, returned to his home last Thursday. This was Mr. Slagle's first visit to Franklin in 39 years. Mrs. Fred Palmer who has been in Angel hospital for the past week, returned to her home in the Cullasaja community Wednesday. Mrs. Harry Potts, who has been under treatment at Angel hospital for several days, has returned to her home on Bonny Crest. Mrs. Aden Tallent, who under went an operation at Angel hos pital last week, is reported to be doing nicely. E. W. Long, Franklin town clerk, who has been ill at his home for the past two weeks, is improving. Gilmer A. Jones left Monday for Raleigh to attend a meet ing of the North Carolina State Bar. Weaver Cochran, of Flats, who recently underwent a series of brain operations, following in iuries received when he was beaten with a hammer at the time his store was robbed last fall, was in Franklin Wednes day, apparently recovered. Claude Stamey, of the Pren tiss section, has been under treatment for blood poison at Angel clinic since Saturday. His ;ondition is reported by Mrs. Stamey to be much improved. Mrs. Z. V. Shope, of Prentiss, left Wednesday for Newport News, Va., where she plans to spend a month with her daugh ter, Mrs A. O. Stampley. Mrs. Burdelle Ray, who is smployed at Ray's Flower shop in Waynesville, spent Tuesday and Wednesday of last week with her daughter, Mrs. Clyde 21ark, at the latter's home on ;he Georgia road.
