Otherwise, it was explained, bond sales soon would glut the market and force the Interest rates upward. John M. Archer, Jr., Carl 8. Slagle, the Rev. Charles E. Parker, and R. S. Jones, mem bers of a nine-person committee named by the P. T. A. to study schools outside Macon County, with a view to seeking advan tages for Macon County children equal to those enjoyed by chil dren in other North Carolina counties, appeared before the board. Mr. Archer, explaining that the group's sole aim was to work with the board, suggested that it should not be necessary for the parent-teacher associa tion to provide telephone serv ice at the Franklin school and pay a Janitor to keep the toilets clean, ai it did last year; that a course in public school music should be offered; and that it would be desirable to offer pub lic speaking and dramatics. Mr. Houk, speaking for the board, assured the committee that school funds are available to pay for the telephone and to provide Janitor service. He said attendance figures for last year were high enough to entitle the Franklin school to three addi tional teachers, and that a pub lic school music teacher will be employed, If a teacher certified to teach that subject can be found; and indicated a desire to provide some Instruction In public speaking and dramatics through the English depart ment. He added, however, that these matters are largely up to the school principal. Mr. Archer suggested that, if everybody in Franklin will start ' looking for a teacher of public school music, one may be found. Mr. Houk added that a teach er certified to teach physical education has been employed, and it is planned to put a eomprehenslve physical educa tion program into the Frank Un aehool. 1 It was decided to buy three new school buses to replace out worn vehicles; to Install coal ! stoves In school rooms now heated by wood; and to do no painting, expect at the Otto school.
