'Cap'n Jeff' Remembers Days Of 26-Sail Ships Manteo. ? There were 26 sails on a full-rigged, three-masted ship. With all her canvas un furled and full of wind, she ' looked like a proud pouter pig- 1 eon, but the names given to i her sails belong to a dead lan- I guage now, because the iron hull ' and the grinding engine have driven her from the seas, and with her most of the men who climbed her rigging and swab bed her decks and counted a voyage in months, even years, instead of days or weeks. Here and there,, in seacoast towns, however, one may still find an old-timer who knew the sailing vessel in all her glory, and can still name all those 26 sails. There is one in Manteo. He is Jefferson Davis Hayman, and he celebrated his 84th birthday recently with a picnic dinner at Fort Raleigh, where he has been unofficial guide and general factotum for 18 years. There was a birthday cake, and about 30 members of his family gathered under the trees at the Fort for the celebration. "Leastways," said Captain Jeff later, "I reckon there was 30 of 'em. I didn't count 'em. And I reckon the cake had 84 candles onto her, but I didn't bother to count them, either." Capain Jeff is five feet five Franklin until he entered the armed forces in 1942. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Baldwin have announced the birth of a daughter, Mary Jean, July 7, at the Maternity hospital, Clayton, Ga. Mrs. Baldwin is the former Miss Helen Henderson, of Frank lin, Route 2. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dunn, of Clayton, Ga., formerly of Franklin, have announced the birth of a son, Robert Alan, June 26, at the Maternity hos pital, Clayton, Ga. Mrs. Dunn was, before her marriage, Miss Etta Mills, of Franklin. Hotel Langren When in Asheville Stop at Atheville's Largest ? Enjoy the 'talk of the town" food at the Rhododendron Grill inches and 130 pounds of spry manhood. "Yes," he conceded, "I'm 84, or so they tell me, but I've never seen a man that could out knock me or throw me downt "I was born in 1863," he went on, "and my great-grandpa and my grand-pa were washed ashore together from an English ship around 1818, over here on the beach, and that's how the Haymans got started on Roa noke Island. I was ten years old when I started getting $5 a month for sailing before the mast in a small ship that sailed around Elizabeth City and Ed enton, and I was 15 when I was cap'n of a small ship that hauled fish from here to Eliza beth City. She was the Amer ican Eagle. About five tons. And I was cap'n of a sea ves sel before I was 18. In 1881 and '82 I sailed in the West Indies trade as a royal boy, furling sails. Yes, I guess you'd call it deck hand now. "But I quit sailing in '06 and came home and got elected sheriff of Dare county. I was sheriff for eight years, and I come out here to Fort Raleigh when there wasn' nothing but one shagk here, before they built all this." He swung a short arm to en compass the chapel, the muse um, the stockade and the Wat erside Theatre where "The Lost Colony" is produced each July and August. "Yes," he said, "I've seen 'er grow, and I've seen many a person through this place." . Captain Jeff operates a small drink and souvenir stand near the chapel. He drives to the fort each day and home again each night. His house, near the fort on the "North End", was built in 1806. Dr. Winstead Joins Angel Clinic Staff Dr. George A.
