PLAN MEETING
I ON ARTIFICIAL
I. BREEDING UNIT
Farmers Gathering Called
By Mendenhall For
Next .Thursday
A meeting for the purpose of
determining the number of
farmers interested in the estab
lishment of a livestock artific
ial breeding unit will be held
next Thursday morning at 10
o'clock at the Agricultural build
ing. All persons interested in
this topic are asked by County
Agent S. W Mendenhall to at
tend the meeting.
Information will be given at
this meeting concerning the
value of artificial breeding, its
cost to the farmer, and the type
of local organization best adapt
ed for placing this system in
operation.
Mr. Mendenhall pointed out
that, if an organization were
lormed, it could employ an In
seminator and purchase semgn
from any available source.
! He added that the American
Scientific Breeding association is
proposing to put in registered,
proven bulls in a bull barn re
j cently built by the Farmers
I Federation at Fairview. This
| establishment would sell semen
at a reasonable rate, provided
there is a sufficient demand by
the farmers to warrant such an
undertaking.

Timely Farm Questions
Q What can I do to remove
oil that is accidentally spilled
into a well?
A. David S. Weaver, head of
the Agricultural Engineering de
partment at State college, says,
so far as he knows, there is no
chemical available on the mark- t
et that would remove the oil. '
However, where there is only a
small amount of oil in the wat
er, continued pumping will prob
ably remove it.
There will be no serious dam
age done by the oil until it is |
removed, he says, other than
altering the taste and staining :
of white clothes that are waqh- I
ed with the water from the well. !
Q. How can I control domest
ic mosquitoes?
A. Since domestic mosquitoes
breed in so many places, it is
important to make frequent in
spections of fche premises and
eliminate, as far as possible, all
temporary water containers. Tin
cans, bottles, jars, old tires, and
the like should be promptly dis
posed of. A good practice for
every housewife to follow is to
see that every tin can has holes
punched in the bottom or has
both ends removed and the can
flattened. Eaves' troughs should
be examined occasionally to see
that they are not stopped up or
sagged so that they will hold
water. Likewise flat roofs should
be examined after rains to see
that water is not held on them.
Cesspools and septic tanks must
be tightly covered, that is, so as
to exclude all mosquitoes.
Rain barrels or tubs in which
water is stored are often the
source of hordes of mosquitoes.
Ci.sterans, whether above or be
low ground, often breed many
of these pests. Often cisterns
breed mosquitoes in profusion.
These should be tightly covered
or screened, and the spouts must
be screened also. Water pans
and troughs used for chickens
water should be emptied once a

week and thoroughly washed
Mosquitoes often breed In pud
dles ol water allowed to drain ;
under the house from refriger
ators. Rain water, and water al
lowed to leak from hydrants and
to form pools in the yard, are
sources also. These pools can
usually be eliminated by im
proved drainage.
