U. S. Agency Ends Debate On How Far Out Is Gulf Stream MOREHEAD CITY,? A perpe tual question along the North Carolina coast in recent years has been, "How Far is the Gulf Stream from yarious points along the state's ocean shore line?" The question has been asked so many times since Gulf Stream fishing has become such a popular sport and profitable enterprise for North Carolina, that the chamber of commerce here requested Senator William B Umstead's office in Wash ington to get the authentic data from the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. _ * Usually when the matter of how far the stream of blue and warm water, which originates in the Gulf of Mexico and moves northward along the Atlantic coast, is from the North Caro lina mainland, a variety of an swers would be given. Some times press dispatches have in dicated that the Gulf Stream was only a matter of 20 miles off shore, while some of the lo cal skippers, have said that it was actually 75 to 100 miles. Actually, according to the report that Senator Umstead re ceived from the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, the govern ment organization which keeps track of the ocean's depths, the Gulf Stream is only 30 nau tical miles from Morehead City, and that, roughly, is 35 statute miles. From Cape Lookout, the 3ulf Stream is only 20. miles lautical, or 23 statute miles. SPECIALS THIS WEEK ELECTRIC AUTO HORNS:? Coiled Trumpets, Air Shell $7.90 pr. Coiled Projectors, Trinote $12.00 pr.
