MORE THAN 300 ATTEND REUNION 102-Year Old Mrs. Ridley Is Hicks-Owens Group Guest Of Honor More than three hundred persons were present at the eighth annual reunion of the Hicks and Owens families Sep tember 6 at the Nantahala for est recreation park on the Wal halla road. The invocation was given by Ivan Owens. J. E. Hicks acted as master of ceremonies and official welcomer of th? many guests of the two families The oldest member of the Hicks family present was Mrs. B. C. Ridley, lovingly known as "Aunt Sis", whose 102 years of age entitled her to a place as guest of honor. Visiting guests, inQluding a large delegation from High lands, were Impressed by the friendly spirit that prevailed In fo large a gathering, as well as by the bountiful and delicious dinner, one guest remarking that there was enough left over to serve another three hundred persons. Highlands School Science Students Visit Laboratory The eighth and tenth grade science students at Highlands school enjoyed a trip to the Highlands Biological laboratory with their teacher, R. B. Dupree, Thursday, and a talk by Miss Thehna Howell, resident direct or, on the biological resources of the Highlands plateau. Students making the trip were Patsy Hays, Virginia Vinson, Dorothy McKinney, Faye Reese, Jessie Reed, Mildred Nix, Sue Hicks, Lois Potts, Audrey Hays, Pearl Chastain, Mildred Mason, Hazel Chastain, Lillie Mae Owens, Charles Ray Norton, Virginia Westbrook, Arline Crunkleton, Vivian Rogers, Or ville Owens, Dick Potts, .Louis Reese, Bobby Potts. Jo Anne Bensel, Joyce Burn ette, Ruby Keener, Hazel. Crane, Thelma Wood, Joe Crowe, Wayne Crowe, Richard Houston, Doris Dockery, Betty Jean Stew art, Martha Holt, Hazel Ed wards, Albert Edwards, Warren Picklesimer, L. C. Howard, Jr., Buddy Holden, Geraldine Reed, Vernon Wilson, Mack Hopper and Estes Owens. Coal is America's most impor tant source of chemicals. Paul Price Named Highlands School Paper's Editor Paul Price has been named editor-in-chief of The Moun tain Trail, Highlands school paper. Associate editors are Mary Phillips and Douglas Pick lesimer. Other staff members include, Isabel Hall, humor editor; Har ry Holt, advertising manager; Mary Deas Anderson, circula tion manager; Kathleen Potts, subscription manager; Joyce Burnette, feature editor; Anne Anderson, local news; Ed Talley, school reported. Eighth grade reporter, Virgin ia Westbrook; ninth, Martha Howard; tentn, Martha Holt; eleventh, Arnold Keener; and twelfth. Annie Nix. Comic writers are Buddy Houston and Arnold Keener. PARTY SERENADES HIGHLANDS COUPLE More than 75 persons gave Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rice, newly married Highlands couple, an old-fashioned serenade last Sat urday night. Following the serving of re freshments, the groom was "rid den on a rail" by the young men of the party, and the bride was given a ride on a wheelbarrow by the young ladles, in keeping with traditional wedding sere nade parties. Personal Mention Mrs W R. Potts and daugh ter, Miss Peggy Potts, have re turned from a visit in Atlanta with Mrs. Potts' sister, Mrs. Nash Broyles. Miss Mary Bascom Cook left Tuesday to resume her studies at Brenau academy, Gainesville, Ga. Claude Talley has accepted a position in New Jersey for the winter, where Mrs. Talley will Join him later. Mr and Mrs. W H. Cobb had as their week-end guest theii' brother, Frank J. Cobb, of Richmond, Va. Miss Pearl Wright's friends will regret to hear that she has been quite 111 for the past sev eral days. Dr. and Mrs. Julian Chlsholm, of Savannah, Ga., are returning this week to complete their sea son at the Sara Gilder cottage on Fourth street. Mrs. Beale Is the former Miss Doris Trombley of Pawtuckett, R. I. Mr. and Mrs. Allan R. Brown are this week moving Into their newly purchased home, the East Main street cottage formerly owned by Miss Rebecca Nail. Miss Nail left Monday for Washington, D. C., where she will spend the winter. Two of Highlands' summer hotels closing Monday were Highlands inn and Tricemont terrace. Several others are re maining open through this month. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Meyer have returned to their home in St. Louis, Mo., after a two weeks' visit here with Mr. and Mrs. A B. Potts and family and with Mrs. Russell's mother, Mrs. Ella Crane. Week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Davis were Mr. and Mrs. A D. Bolton of Commerce, Ga., and Mr. and Mrs W. W. Mitchell, of Atlanta. Mrs. E. R. Gilbert and Mr. and Mrs. Tudor N. 11311 and family returned Saturday from their annual beach vacation at Ocean Drive, S. C. Miss Frances Crunkleton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Crunkleton, has returned to Lees-McRae college, at Banner Elk, for her sophomore year. ? JOIN ?
