3 EAGLE SCOUTS GET TOP AWARD AT HONOR COURT Impressive Ceremony Marked By Other Promotions Three Franklin boys received the Eagle Scout award ' last Thursday night in the first court of honor held in the build ing erected as a memorial to one of Franklin's first Eagle scouts ? Charlie Slagle. Frank L. Henry, III, Charles John Thomas, and John Alsup, | II, received Eagle Scout badges as the climax' of an impressive ceremony during which 65 awards were made by members of the Smoky Mountain district council to Scouts from troops in Macon, Swain, and Jackson counties. Bobby Myers, son of Mr. and Mrs, Leonard Myers, of Franklin', Route 2, received the Star Scout award, and four scouts from the Franklin troop, Claude McFalls, Kenneth Carpenter, Alvin Stiles, and Howard Patton were given first class badges. Twelve Frank lin boys received merit badges. Tlie court of honor, presided over by Hugh Monteitb of Sylva, district chairman, was opened with the advancing of the colors and the pledge of allegiance to the flag, which was led by John Archer, III, of the Franklin troop, and the singing of the first stanza of America. Richard- S. Jones, Jr., court clerk, then read the names of those to whom awards were to be presented. All Scouts receiving awards came to the front of the room and stood before 15 lighted candles, which symbolized the 12 Scout laws and the three phases of the Scout oath. The candles were lit and the Scout laws given by Edwin Allison, council member from Sylva. In addition to the Eagle awards, one Life Scout and two Star Scout badges were pre sented by members of the coun cil. Scouts from the different troops in the district also re ceived 56 merit badges. Four first class badges, and one sec ond class badge from council members at this court of honor. Second class awards were made by John Edwards, former Franklin scout master, the Rev. W. Jackson Huneycutt presented the Scouts with their merit MISS NOVELLA WOODARD Miss Woodard, former Frank lin High srhoul student and niece of Mrs. Charles A. Elmore, of West's Mill, recently was made a member of Delta Iota chapter of the Phi Theta Kap pa, at Spartanburg college. Phi Theta Kappa is a junior college honorary fraternity comparable to Phi Beta Kappa in senior col leges. Sanders Visits Many Mediterranean Pcrts Fred W. Sanders^ navy sea man first class, son of Mrs. Mamie D. Sanders, of Franklin, has recently visited seven for eign countries while serving aboard the destroyer USS Gain ard now stationed in the Med i iterranean area. Among the 1 ports yisited by Seaman Sanders ! are Gibraltar, Pola, Trieste, Suda Bay, on the isle of Crete; Alexandria, Egypt; Naples and [Venice, Italy; and Villafranche, France. Radges, the Rev. B. Hoyt Evans presented the two Star Scout awards and the Life Scout pre sentation was made by John Archer. Following this came the cli max of the evening when the Rev. A. Rufus Morgan was ask ed to present the Eagle awards. Mr. Morgan responded by de claring this was the greatest honor that had come to him in many years of Scout work. He asked that the parents of the, boys and their scoutmasters come forward. He then present ed the awards to the mothess of the boys, who pinned the high est awards in Scouting on thei; sons and received from their sons small replicas of the award.
