NEWS ? PEOPLE SERVICE GUILD MARKS ITS TENTH ANNIVERSARY The tenth anniversary of the Wesleyan Service guild of the Franklin Methodist church was celebrated at the regular meet ing last Wednesday night, held at the home of Mrs. Carl P. Cabe. Gifts were presented by Mrs. H. A. Wilhlde, guild president, to the eight charter members of the organization. Those re ceiving momentos of the oc casion were Mrs. Roy Cunning ham, Mrs. Grover Jamison, Jr., Mrs. Bill Grimm, Mrs. L. A. Ross, Mrs. Neal Johnston, Mrs. A. B. O'Mohundro, Mrs. Carl Tysinger, and Mrs. Carl Cabe. Mrs. Hunter Calloway led a worship service, and Mrs. Cabe, first president of the organiza tion, gave a brief resume of the history of the organization since its founding in 1937. Refreshments of ice cream, cake, and hot chocolate were served in the dining room, which was attractively decorat ed in a Hallowe'en motif. Mrs. Lee Guffey, Mrs. Ellis C. Soper, and Mrs. Carl Jamison served as co-hostesses with Mrs. Cabe. v MRS. SLOAN HONORED WITH SURPRISE SHOWER More than 40 friends gather ed at the new home of Mrs. W. W. Sloan to surprise her with a "house warming shower." Following the presentation of many useful gifts and a tour of the new home, the guests ad journed to the home of Mrs. A. A Siler, next door, for refresh ments. Co-hostesses for the occasion were Mrs. Siler and Mrs. Fred Slagle, assisted- by Mrs. Bob Sloan and Mrs. John Bulgin. ERIKSSONS GIVEN FAREWELL DINNER AND DANCE Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Eriksson were the guests of honor at a farewell dinner and dance giv en Saturday evening at Buck Creek ranch by personnel of the Nantahala National forest. Mr. Eriksson has recently been transferred to the Atlanta of fice of the U. S. forest service. -The family left Monday for At lanta. Following a dinner, served ' buffet style, Mr. and Mrs. Eriks- < son were presented with a ' cherry bed-side table by Toast- : master Clint Johnson on behalf i of the forest service employees. Following short talks by E. W. 1 Renshaw and Mr. Eriksson, the chairs were pushed back and the floor of the big living room of the ranch house was cleared and dancing for the evening was begun with an old fashioned Virginia reel. Marvin Hoover, Miss Ren Diegel, and Graay Waldroop. Personal Mention Mrs. Fred Slagle, who has been quite ill, is able to be out again. Fred Slagle, Jr., and Allen Angel, students at Brevard col lege, spent last week-end at home with their families. Mrs. Gilmer A. Jones left Monday to spend a few days in Atlanta. W. N. Sloan, of Atlanta, is spending about two weeks in Franklin on busines. Mr. and Mrs. Beecher Mills, of Belmont, and daughter, Zona Maria, spent the week-end here with Mrs. Mills' mother, Mrs. Tallie Tallent, of Franklin, Route 3. Miss Roberta Henson has been spending the past week with friends and relatives in Detroit, Mich. Mr. and Mrs. John Bulgin spent the week-end in Atlanta visiting Mr. Bulgin's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Stetfg Wilson. - Miss Tim Sloan, of Atlanta, spent this past week visiting her mother, Mrs. J. S. Sloan, at her home in East Franklin. Wiley Brown made a business trip to Greenville, S. C., Monday. Jimmy McCollum, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. James McCollum, of Franklin, who recently under went an emergency operation , at Angel hospital, is reported to be doing nicely. Lawrence N. Crunkleton, of Highlands underwent an oper atlon at Angel hoapltal last Thursday. R. 8- Jones was In Cullowhee Tuesday to attend a meeting of the board ot trustees of West ern Carolina Teachers college and a memorial service for Dr. H. T. Hunter, the late president of the institution. Mrs. F. B. Alexander Is able to be out again, following treat ment at Angel hospital. Gilmer A. Jones left Monday on a business trip to Raleigh. | Major and Mrs. Frank Car mack left here recently for Rochester, Minn., where Major Carmack will be examined, and possibly treated, at the Mayo Clinic. The Carmacks, who will spend the winter in Florida, plan to return to Franklin next spring. Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Jones, of Asheville, spent the week-end here visiting relatives. Mrs. T. J. Johnston, who en tered Angel hospital last week, is reported improving and hopes to return to her home the lat ter part of this week. Zone Meeting Of W. S. C. S. To Be Held Friday Women's Societies for Chris tian service of Macon County Methodist churches will hold a zone meeting at Snow Hill church, on the Franklin circuit, tomorrow (October 17). The meeting will start at 10:30 a. m. All Methodist women of the county, regardless of whether they are members of the organ ization or of whether a society has been organized at their church, are invited, Mrs. Fred Slagle, zone chairman, said. It is hoped, Mrs. Slagle added, to organize a society in every Methodist church in the county. Mrs. E. L. McKee, of Sylva, has been invited to address the meeting. Each woman attending is ask ed to bring a covered dish for a "pot luck" lunch to be serv ed at noon. BUILDING SUMMER HOME Charles Moore, of Gastonia. is building a cabin at what is known as the Western Louder milk place on Upper Ellijay. Mrs. Moore, after spending sev eral weeks here with him, has returned to their home in Gas tonia.
