^ Small Forest Management Discussed In New Bulletin The South's 1,500,000 farmers and other owners of small I ' woodl jts, most of which average ! < about 75 acres, can learn much ' about how to manage their for- I est properties, both for current 1 cash and future profits, from 1 Farmers' Bulletin No. 1989, ' "Managing the Small Forest," publication of which was an nounced recently by the U. S. Forest Service. The bulletin reports that tim ber is scarce "almost every where In the world," that forest products are bringing high ' prices, and says, "there never was a better time to make a small forest pay." i Yet in 1945, it goes on to say. 1 "71 per cent of the small own ers cut their trees in such a way that the cut-over land had al most no timber values left and either could not grow a new for- , est at all or could do so ? only with difficulty" while "only 4 * per cent cut wisely, leaving 8 their forests able not only to E grow but to improve."
