Three Injured
In Mishap; 1
Driver Held
Three men, Re* Duvall and
Lewis Fouts, ol me ournmg
' Luwn community, and James W
Oakes, oi Kiuxviiie, i'enn, were
nipured in the head-on collis
ion of two autonuoiies on the
?? ranklin-clayton highway last
vVednesday afternoon. Both cars
] were virtually demolished.
T. W. Smith, of Knoxville
driver of one of the automo
Diles, was charged with reckless
driving and was released Thurs
| Jay on a $200 cash bond.
The three injured were ad
mitted to Angel hospital for
treatment of severe bruises and
lacerations. Mr. Duvall and Mr.
Fouts were discharged Thurs
| day, and Mr. Oakes t> riday.
Riding with Mr. Smith in a
1946 Chevrolet sedan, which
was traveling north, were Ed
I ward Payne, Bob Wouther, ivii
Oakes, and James Phillips, ah
of Knoxville. The only occu
pants of the other car, a lSMi.
Ford coach, were Mr. Duvall am.
Mr: Fouts.
The accident occurred when
the car driven by Mr. Smith
attempted to round the Lowry
curve, traveling north at what
officers said was a high rate of
speed; ran off the pavement on
the left hand side, cut back on
\o the pavement and crasneu
into the car driven by
going south, before returning to
the right side of the roau.
Tire marks clearly showed the
course of travel taken by tht
Smith car.
Although broken beer bottles
were found in the Ford, all oc
cupants of both cars were ex
amined and no one was fjuna
to have been drinking according
to Deputy Sheriff Walter Dean,
who assisted Sheriff J. Brad
ley in investigating the acci
lent.
A national goal of 50,000.000
pigs for the spring of 1948 was
suggested to farmers, recently b>
(JSDA, which at the same time
reemphasized its request for
feeding hogs to lighter weights.
? The magazine, Travel Agent,
predicts a good 1948 travel year,
in spite of some handicaps, in
cluding increasing cost of liv
ing.
