Receiving Ail-Time High
Income From Milk

Tar Heel farmers are now re
ceiving the highest cash income
from milk in the history of thi
state, and 1947 returns are ex
pected to exceed, by a substan
tial amount, the 1946 record
breaking total of $29,574,000,
says J. A. Arey, in charge of
Dairying for the State college
extension service.
The growing importance of
the milk industry to the state's
economy is further evidenced by
the new peak value of $39,856,
000 set on North Carolina's 361,
D00 milk cows, which produced
a total of 693,000,000 quarts of
milk in 1946. Annual milk pro
duction per cow averaged 1,921
quarts.
Expanded utilization of North
Carolina milk as fluid milk for
drinking and cooking has in
creased the overall value of the
state's milk output as farmers
receive their highest price for
milk used in this form. Latest
annual figures for North Caro
lina show butter production at
1,561,000 pounds, American whole
milk cheese at 1,142,000 pounds,
and ice cream at 16,364,000 gal

Lt. Hunter W. Anderson, son
of George Anderson, of Frank
lin, Route 1, was a member ol
the crew in the B-29 fortress
which recently established the
world's record for long range
B-29 flights on a normal gaso
line load, according to an an
nouncement received here.
The plane flew for 23 hours,
covering a distance of 4,700
miles, and landing with 600
gallons of gasoline to spare.
Lt. Anderson and his wife are
now living at Salina. Kansas.

became the new manager of
the Dixie-Home super store
here Tuesday morning. He suc
ceeded E. S Lane, who was
transferred. Mr. Childs plans to
