Palmer Street Phone 273 HOUK WRITES LOCAL MASONIC LODGE HISTORY Sketch Throws Light On Development Of County A history of the Masonic lodge here, written by Guy L. Houk, has just been issued by Mr. Houk in mimeograph form. The 8,000-word book carries the title, "Junaluskee Lodge 145 A. F. & A. M., Franklin, North Carolina, 1851-1947". While the work deals primar ily with the growth and vicis situdes of the lodge, and there fore is chiefly of interest to Masons, bound up with the his tory of the lodge is much of the early history of Macon County. For example, Mr. Houk has taken from the lodge records a reference to the local Masons' visiting Clayton, Ga., in June, 1904, to Join the lodge there in celebrating the arrival of the | Tallulah Falls railway that far north; the wiring of the Mason 1 ic hall for electricity in 1910 fixes the approximate date elec 1 trie lighting came to Franklin; ! the records show that the pres I ent Masonic hall was construct j ed in 1870, that it cost the sum ! of $541.74, and that the building was designed to serve also as "a Female Academy"; the Franklin Public library opened on the first floor of the hail in 1901; and the arrival of Bowers brothers? Charles D. and Elbren S.? from Vermont In 1881 mark ed an important date in the ex ploitation of the mineral wealth of this region. Perhaps the most interesting single incident recorded is the story of the waylaying, murder, and robbery of Nimrod Jarrett, early Macon County Mason; the subsequent arrest 6f the murd erer, whose heelless shoes pro vided the clue; and the murd erer's trial and execution by hanging. ' Purely lodge history of gen eral interest includes such items as the fact that the lodge for many years paid J. T. Siler, first master, the sum of $1.50 per month as rental for the lodge room, upstairs over Mr. Siler's store, which was about where "Dixie Hall" now stands; the reference to the "abduction of the jewels of the lodge by some of Col. Kirk's command" in 1866; and the account of the lodge's belated observance, in 1903, of its fiftieth anniversary Speakers at the banquet on that occasion (the banquet was 0 Jib It's Good House-Keeping ... to keep your house in tip-top condition.
